These are supposed to be our best and brightest, mind you.

I can see the phone part. Young people have no idea how to actually speak on the phone anymore.

The best and brightest don't need these classes

This should be a required one hour course in all high schools across America. Maybe even college. My law firm actually had to have classes for the firm because a few partners were so clueless they were embarrassing the firm. And these were middle aged men.

Would you rather they learn how to act in an office environment or learn something completely useless like gender studies? This at least gives them somewhat of a chance in the real world

I interviewed a bunch of soon to be college grads last summer for a entry level position. Of all the ones I interviewed only one sent a thank you email and I had one that didn't bother showing and he neve reached out to let me know he wasn't going to make it.
Terrible!

Yeah, I know plenty of older people who could take these classes too.

I got 3 hours of credit in college on Greek Mythology. This business class sounds way more productive than that. At least they will use it when they get out.
Also, in the LSU MBA school, we had a Friday where we went to a lunch to show us proper formal dinner etiquette. It was pretty helpful.

Why should you be thanked for an interview? That's retarded.

Yep. This should have been a required course for at least the last 20 years. Some people get, but some just don't.

To affirm your interest in the position, and to single yourself out from those that didn't send a follow up email.

The best business schools have been teaching these things for several decades. So go crawl back into your hole gramps.

People used to learn this at their high school jobs.

Are you suggesting that social behavior classes are new?

You learned proper dining etiquette and proper business dress at your high school job?

Huge failure on the parents' part. These skills should have been instilled at home.

I told my Alma Mater's new principal a year ago that they needed a real world class that taught juniors and seniors how to deal with every day life after school. A class that went over how to create and stick to a budget, work etiquette like this college class, the upside and downside to social media and how it can help and hurt you, basic cooking and cleaning and general home maintenance. Things everyone should know how to do but for some reason don't anymore.
I even chewed his arse out about a simple thing that came up a few months later. I did some volunteer work there and got a few materials donated because of my previous working relationship with the companies. I talked to them weeks later and asked if they received any type of thank you note or any acknowledgement from the school and both told me that they haven't heard a work from them. I went to the school and confronted the principal and told him that he was supposed to teach kids to be an adult and they couldn't even put together a simple thank you letter for companies donating a few hundred in materials. His only reply was "Oh yeah, I didn't think about that. I will get the secretary to put something together on Monday" Of course, they never did it.

you really think poor kids' parents can teach them about the nuances of business and dining etiquette, the various levels of business dress, and the interview process of a white collar job?
your privilege showing.

Technology does that to a generation.
