Not the Bee TOTD: UW shocked to find its students aren't really racist

Campus Reform
Note: I did a google search and didn't see this pop up.
quote:
UW psychology professor Markus Brauer, who led the study, said that students from marginalized backgrounds “are very frequently the target of discrimination or offensive comments.” To test students’ habits around inclusivity, Brauer and his team hired actors over the course of several years to represent students from marginalized backgrounds — Black, Asian American, and Muslim, as well as a male who wore a “gay pride” shirt — to participate in behaviors that could elicit discrimination from other students.
The researchers, who expected to find a high degree of discrimination, found that the vast majority of students treat students from different backgrounds equally well.
“We were surprised by these results,” explained Brauer. “We tried out one situation, then another one, and so forth. But study after study came back with the same result: Most students did not treat our white actor more positively than the Black, Asian, or Muslim actors.”
quote:
Brauer explained that “more and more people argue that not being racist is not enough, and that our goal should be to be anti-racist.” He explained that although the study found that students largely did not discriminate, it did not “measure how many students on campus are anti-racist.”

Most people in general don't go around being dicks. People, for the most part, are generally pleasant in casual encounters.

Brauer says it was an interesting insight into the campus community: Though discrimination undoubtedly occurred — especially toward Black and Muslim actors in the experiments — the discrimination was caused by a numerical minority of the individuals whose behavior was observed.
quote:
The ratios are consistent with the Pareto principle. Sometimes called the 80/20 rule, the idea named for economist Vilfredo Pareto says that (loosely) 80 percent of the effects come from 20 percent of the causes in many phenomena — 80 percent of revenue from 20 percent of customers, 75 percent of political donations from 10 percent of voters, most cheating perpetrated by a small group of players.

However, if the lab’s findings hold up in future studies, Brauer says successful approaches to increasing tolerance and minimizing harmful interactions on campus should avoid a one-size-fits-all strategy.
no shite

The stuff these people make up and get people to believe is so stupid.

This isn’t surprising. It’s why people always laugh at these hyper ridiculous stories that blow up on twitter.

"And now that our other research and research money has concluded and the money is spent without getting evidence that would 'require' more money, we see no other choice than to come up with absurd goals that would allow for our research to last forever".
- Markus Brauer (more than likely)

Where do I sign up to get paid as an actor to walk around a college campus all day?

This. The easiest and best way to deal with a racist is actually have them interact with that race and see its just normal people.

What would be funny is when they look into the politics and views of those that did actually act racist it would most likely be the more liberal leaning students

It's almost like the goal is to train the next generation of race baiters and grifters. Got to keep the industry going I guess.

The problem that we are studying really isn't a problem but it's still important dammit

This is not enough! The next phase is to somehow figure out how to police THOUGHT.

Funny part is you know these actors were doing absurd shite to try and elicit racism. And they still couldn’t get evidence.
For instance, I give zero fricks if someone is gay. People can do what they want. But if the “gay pride actor” starts touching me and I trueing on my space I would tell him to back the frick up. Just like I would a hetero person. But in their study, I guarantee that my actions would be “biased” against gays.

not really
quote:
and designed experiments in which the students engaged in everyday behaviors on the Madison campus. They trailed people into and out of busy campus buildings, recording who extended the courtesy of holding the door; dropped stacks of index cards in occupied elevators, noting who would help pick them up; left open neighboring seats on crowded buses to see who was comfortable filling them.

"It's not good enough to just not be a murderer. You need to be anti-murder."

In spite of these results, the University of Wisconsin is launching a number of programs to fight the influence of racism on campus.
Will cost likely millions a year -
When that money could be spent on, you know, dozens of scholarships for inner city kids.
