No it isnt'. It's to force the air out of their lungs. Actually its to mimic breathing until they begin to breath on their own. Nothing to do with the heart.

If he's got a pulse then no need for CPR. Just do some rescue breaths.

He's right, and you're stupid, as are the majority of people answering this question.

The patient as presented has a "strong pulse". You do not do chest compressions on someone with a pulse.

Let’s be honest, it isn’t the lack of training that’s stopping you.

You see a person in their office or a locker room on the ground, no moving, no talking, but you hear a strong heartbeat.

What to do now?

In the CPR technique, do you do chest compressions, or rescue breaths?

If they are apneic and unresponsive but have a pulse then they need oygenation/ventilation...or cardiac arrest is soon to follow.

Chest compressions are for when the patient is pulseless as well.

In this day and age, you just described an opiate overdose patient.

Nope, chest compressions is to circulate oxygenated blood to the system. When you give meds to help save them if you don’t do chest compressions the medicine will not reach the heart.

No need for CPR because

So call 911 and make sure the airway is clear. Good chance something is stuck in there.

Thanks Tiguar. Some people took one class and think they know it all. They have never been in a code situation

AED will not work on someone with a heartbeat. They have protections for that.

Granted, there may be some sort of way to trick it, like the person being in AFib or something. But using an AED could actually help that situation.

This is one of the many scenarios where I run and grab my backpack to retrieve the 6” needle I’m going to jab into the ribcage. I forget step 2, but step 3 is the memorable interview on the local news.

I call 911 and follow their instructions. I'm not trained to give emergency aid, and I don't want to make things worse not knowing what to do.
