One day far in the future the site will be excavated like a modern day Pompeii to reveal our footprint of piss, vomit, petty crime and homelessness

That's likely the least of bodily fluids on it already.

Is this just on Bourbon or are they doing other streets like Royal or St Ann?

I know blacktop is cheap and easy to install, but you would think they'd at least try to figure out a way to change the color of it so it's not 1,000 degrees in the summer in hot southern cities.

They couldn't have done it 60 years ago? That disease stained cobblestone should be studied by the CDC

Laying asphalt thicker isn't going to make the road stronger.
They'll be milling that down to the cracked up concrete in under a decade.

Photo in the OP is Chartres at Dumaine (Harry's Corner), but they did roll St Ann as well.

Maybe it’s the perspective of the shot. But if they paved up to the level of the curb like it looks, without major drainage work, they will flood the shite out of those buildings

First thing I noticed. That's not good.

i have STRONG and i mean STRONG association with the smell of bourbon and walking around as a wee tot in the 1970s with my aunt & uncle in the Quarter.

in fact, that turned me off to drinking bourbon until well into my 40s.

All the streets and sidewalks in the French Quarter were resurfaced in about 1976.

I'm pretty sure all the cobblestone streets are uptown from the CCC.
