Why has no one said this yet:
Under the American Flag after the civil war slavery remained.
Lincoln himself thought of black people as lesser than white.
Under Washington and our founding fathers Indians and slaves and any non white Christian males were persecuted.
We should not pick and choose what parts of history to remember.
In America's history we have persecuted:
Women
Africans
Native Americans
Japanese
Mexicans
Italians
Irish
Retarded
Gay
Old
Young
Muslim
Cajun
French
Spanish
Any number of things.
Unless you want to change the current American flag, which has flown over the persecution of everything I just listed, and every single monument and statue erected before the civil rights act and even many years after, then we need to understand that these statues are not a problem. A lack of individual and community responsibility is a problem.
At a time when it is important to stand together and move forward as a country
At a time when we have more freedom and more liberty and more opportunity for people of all races creeds and codes than any other point or people in history
We choose to be divided on the most trivial of issues rather than stand with each other and appreciate the history we came from and the future ahead.
We are at a dangerous crossroads. One which lead us to freedom and new life or a back slide to oppression and death. And I ask all of you to join together with me and move forward. Not stand for defeat and division.

Most ironic thing to me is the North was the ones to make it a thing about race. The Civil War was all about an economic issue that would have worked itself out without Northern intervention. Apart from the John Brown incident and some of the attacks by pro-abolitionist radicals in Kansas, this didn't become a thing about slavery until the North was losing the war and they needed a reason for Yankee soldiers to keep fighting a war in a legally independent nation state.
That being said, celebrating any military officer who laid it all on the line for his countrymen has nothing to do with race. I feel sorry for the shameless, ignorant people who are for this movement to erase our history.
