First the Lincoln quote is completely irrelevant to your original post or my response. I would never state that Lincoln advocated racial equality. Nor would I posit that even most Northerners would have supported it. This quote and Northerners racist beliefs are commonly brought up by Lost Causers out of nowhere as if it proves something. I never get the point of it. No one would argue with you on that. It's like you guys attended some convention where this was stated as standard procedure to distract from the actual argument. If someone attempts to post a hagiography of Lincoln then sure trot that quote on out there. Until then it is irrelevant to the discussion at hand. I will say this though, Southerners believed that Northerners and Lincoln wanted racial equality and there was much propaganda about it. This is an extremely important point.


You made some rather absurd statements. "the North was the ones to make it a thing about race... [slavery] would have worked itself out without Northern intervention....[southerners] admitted before the war started that slavery was a vile and evil instiution and could not be sustained in America and it should be ended" And finally to get at the heart of your sentiment, the false statement "The Civil War was not fought to preserve slavery."


I will assume you have not lived your entire life in an echo chamber and have read (and conveniently ignored) Alexander Stephens cornerstone speech and the declaration of causes of seceding states. I will set those aside. I will not argue the case but let quotes from Southern politicians at the time my case. First we have the Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Northern states and Congress had attempted "a persistent and organized system of hostile measures against the rights of the owners of slaves in the Southern States" He described slavery that had transformed "brutal slaves into docile, intelligent and civilized agricultural laborers."

Next, As Charles Dew writes "As sectional tension mounted in late 1860 and early 1861, five states of the lower South- Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana-appointed commissioners to other slave states and instructed them to spread the secessionist message across the entire region. These commissioners often explained in detail why their states were exiting the union."

The following quotes are from those conventions.

I hold no ill will toward you but your statements were false. And you need to come to terms with the fact that maybe you don't know as much as you think you do. If you need me to explain the reasons in another post why slavery was not on the economic decline or fading away, I will do so.

The problem is the council is even giving this any thought. And then you got Mitch over here fixing roads. He has the balls to say smart people can do two things at once. Bitch. The money was free from the federal government. Everyone knows you can't balance a fricking budget.

I was so happy when Landrieu was elected. I was a resident of NO during the previous election and was very dismayed that he lost. But those against him were saying how much of a true liberal he was not the blue dog Dem he pretended to be. I'm so disgusted with him now and glad I don't live there anymore. His spineless pandering has really made things much worse.
