Nobody WANTS to work… That's been true since the beginning of time… But let me ask you something…

When did it become a case that getting up early and coming home late was unacceptable when building a resumé?

I cannot speak intelligently about anyone else, so I will speak for myself.

I came from happy-but-humble beginnings… Perhaps I am on third base now, but I certainly wasn't born there… I have been working hard since I was 12 years old to build toward what I am hoping will be a just-as-happy-but-less-humble end. I have complained every step of the way, but I also set a fricking alarm clock every fricking night and got my arse to work.

In lieu of a Thanos snap, I assume things will have to get MUCH worse before it gets any better. We will have to continue being lapped by other cultures before we start to improve ours. We will have to make our basements bigger to accommodate all the kids who either can't afford or can't make the sacrifices needed to move out of their parent's houses. We'll have to put up with shitty customer service and shoddy workmanship until they roll our fat asses into poorly-made coffins.

We have multiple generations getting out into the workforce that just want to be youtube/ticktoc stars and thinks every office is going to be like working at Google. They want coffee bars and personal chef cafeterias in the lobby. The think they need to be included in every "brainstorming session." They don't want to tuck in their shirts, show up on time, leave on time, work their way up, etc. They have been conditioned to think their business degree = instant CEO status.

Hiring/Interviewing young people is a fricking chore.

We had a poster this weekend talking about how he wants to quit work at 38 and spend all his 401k then off himself

These movements are widespread and way beyond what it was before Covid. Now there are tons of unionization pushes and rallies about “eating the rich” promoting hate of billionaires and other rich people. In general it seems Americans got fat and lazy really quickly, all these people want to be given everything just for breathing

Someone that interviews alot was telling me the other day that the modern generations seem to think there's nothing at all wrong with answering texts in the middle of an interview.

26 years old here and I work for a steel company. Is it glamourous? frick no. Do I bitch about my job? Absolutely. Do I wake up every morning at 5:30, get my shite prepared for the day, and go to work at 8 and bust my arse? Absolutely. I wish more people (and my friends included) had the kind of mind set that shite isnt given to you. Many are still living at home while I just bought my first house in March. All I am doing is busting my behind, saving, and attempting to climb that metaphorical ladder.

Bc the government keeps rewarding failure and incompetence by giving away the successful people’s money to them

A couple of things. One this is fairly ironic coming from a guy who quit wall st to do trivia shows, write a blog, and go to boxing matches. He was too drug out by the rat race, but you shouldn't be. Alas, he makes some decent points

Why must we do this though? Salary workers continue to get boned by this as corporate profits and C Suite wages continue to increase at exponential levels. How about you just come to an actual mutual agreement and the people that perform those tasks (not the million extra that may or may not be recognized monetarily or otherwise) get recognition and as such promotions.

Yes, there are a lot of young people who are lazy and/or entitled. This isn't a new phenomenon. The roaring 20's, the hippies, the rave 80's, etc, etc. Young people have always tried to do as little as possible.

This kind of wreaks of a middle aged guy who is telling you what to do while practicing none of it.

This is actually pretty common in most of Europe and Asia.

I never know where to fall on this issue. Young graduates are entitled shitheads but also frick most corporations who don’t really give a shite about their employees.

To me, the only thing that blog was missing was an acknowledgment of how terrible corporate America has become. I agree with everything else he said

Most young people I know have jobs, and I don’t mean stay at home or DoorDash, regular jobs. Lots of boomers retired during Covid, many voids to fill. As far as service jobs why would you work in a place that a mayor or governor can shut you down over a virus? While shutting you down half the country supports it, makes no sense

It's not hard, just make busting their asses to establish their independent lives more attractive than living at home. My kids know that if they were in need they could come back and live at home, but none of them want to do that. They know that at home they will be doing chores for me and I'll be riding them for staying up too late, not looking for work or sleeping til noon. I won't be making their beds and putting a mint on their pillow.

It is common for people all over the world to live with their parents until they get married… and in some cases 3 generations of family in 1 house is normal. The reason it was made not to be normal here is because it was pushed on us that we should want to work hard to have our own place and be independent so that people could sell more houses. It probably made our economy better but it has negatively affected family values in this country.

90% of the people that i've worked with that come in early and leave late hate their wife and use work as an excuse not to go home.

i get that investment bankers, lawyers, CPAs and the like have to put in shite hours. That will not change.

Jim the divorced sales manager thinking people need to be in the office 12 hours a day can frick right off.

I think there are several things at work here.

I think people want to work, but at a certain price. And they are factoring in lifestyle. Is it worth it for me to go to a job and only make so much while giving up doing certain things?

Those entering the job market have too high of expectations, while the older people at the time are not willing to move an inch on what they offer. This is of course, in general, because I think there are companies in which you see a realistic expectation being set and met.

But I also see kids being raised not having to take on any responsibilities. I don't see as many kids mowing the grass anymore or washing the car, etc. I think less kids are being give more responsibility and its carrying over into adult hood.
