SALT LAKE CITY — The world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir will be singing the same tune but under a new name.

The choir was renamed Friday to strip out the word Mormon in a move aimed at ending shorthand names for the religion that have been used for generations by church members and others.

The singers will now be called the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement. It's a nod to the home of the choir for the last 150 years, the Tabernacle, located on church grounds known as Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

The group had been known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since 1929, when it began broadcasting a weekly radio program to a wide audience.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced guidelines in August requesting that people stop using "Mormon" or "LDS" as substitutes for the church's full name. He said "Latter-day Saints" was acceptable shorthand.

The faith holds that the full church name was given by revelation from God to founder Joseph Smith in 1838.

So the head of the Mormon church announced a while back that the church is no longer to be referred to as "Mormon".

This is in another article, but this is what he said.

quote:

"The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," President Nelson said in a statement. "We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will. In recent weeks, various Church leaders and departments have initiated the necessary steps to do so."

A style guide released by the church alongside the statement said, "Please avoid using the abbreviation 'LDS' or the nickname 'Mormon' as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in 'Mormon Church,' 'LDS Church,' or 'Church of the Latter-day Saints.'"

In today's world, where everything is abbreviated, this seems like it would not be attractive to members, especially the younger members. That's kind of long to write/text out "The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints".

I will watch South Park sometimes if it's on, I think it's funny, but I haven't seen more episodes than I have. Did they do one about the Mormons?

The show's writers wrote a whole, and very successful, Book of Mormon broadway show. They poked fun of them, as they do with everyone, in an episode too.

The Mormon Church is heading into decline. They are changing all kinds of things in order to try and stop the mass exodus of members and attempt to attract new ones. Growth has been stagnant. The only real growth has been in Africa which turns out to be a drain on the church's finances since Africans don't offer much in the way of tithing payments - but they do require financial assistance.

The internet has been the reason for this. Members are discovering the Mormon Church's actual past is not what they were taught in church. Joseph Smith was a freak.

Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. Mormon Tabernacle Choir is neither Mormon nor Tabernacle nor Choir. Discuss

They should rename it The Bogus Dumbasses Church.

Truth in advertising.

Don't know enough about the Mormon church to discuss, but if it is a choir from the Mormon church then why isn't it Mormon?

Conversions, attendance, and discarding ones membership is a common theme among most religions. It is not just a Mormon phenomenon. In fact, after looking at stats, due to reading your post, the Mormons still have a positive growth rate year after year.

Your euphoria over the Mormons demise is premature I'm afraid.

I've always been perplexed by the disdain of the Mormons. Particularly by other Christians and perhaps, most so, by Catholics. I find the stated mission of the Mormon Church to be, on balance, a positive force in the world.

And to declare their beliefs as preposterous, while claiming some faith/history high ground by your own religion.. well, that is pretty ridiculous.

In itself that is surprising because until the 1970's they did NO outreach among Blacks because they considered them "cursed".

Then Bob Jones University lost its case to support its openly racist policies. Fearing that they may be next on the IRS watch list, suddenly the head of the Latter-Day Saints had a "revelation from God" that it was now OK to convert Blacks.

I always find it funny to see where people draw a line in respect of what is considered preposterous for religious beliefs.

Mormons call themselves ladder day saints because they can build a barn in a day but it takes a lot of ladders
