New documents show Louisiana has spent $178 million on the COVID medical facility at the New Orleans convention center. Two of the top five contractors receiving money employ Mike Edmonson, who resigned as head of state police amid controversy, and Glenn Curtis #lalege #lagov

The number of patients at the facility--capacity 1,000--reached a peak of 108 on April 16. Then it fell to the single digits and never reached above 31 until it was finally wound down in November #lalege #lagov

Former Louisiana State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson and former Louisiana National Guard commander Glenn Curtis have both emerged as players in the state's response to the coronavirus – this time as consultants in the private sector.
quote:
Edmonson, who resigned his top state post in 2017 amid investigations into questionable overtime and travel by top troopers, is consulting for a group of firms that includes Garner Environmental Services. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness hired that company to house people believed to have coronavirus next to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
quote:
Curtis, who retired in December, works for Dynamic Construction Group, the main contractor on the state’s massive temporary hospital facility at the convention center – the key part of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ strategy to quickly increase the region’s medical capacity so that hospitals are not overrun with coronavirus patients.
quote:
Combined, the contracts are worth tens of millions of dollars, though the exact price tag is in flux in the rapidly moving response to the outbreak. GOHSEP hired Dynamic, a Baton Rouge firm run by Joshua McCoy, for an estimated $33.5 million for the initial project, which involved building out 1,000 beds and providing material for another 1,000 beds. That price tag is expected to grow because Edwards has already exercised an option to expand the facility to include the extra 1,000 beds.
quote:
Louisiana state law prohibits former state agency heads from contracting with, or helping another person contract with, their former agency for two years after leaving office.
quote:
Edwards recently signed an executive order suspending the two-year ban, writing in the order that state agencies have “expressed an urgent need to utilize separated public employees to maintain and fulfill their missions.”
quote:
Dane Ciolino, a professor at Loyola Law School and an expert on Louisiana ethics law, said both Edmonson and Curtis would be in the clear because their private consulting work is being done on contracts with a different agency than their former employers. Both contracts were awarded by GOHSEP.

It’s not like JBE hides his corruption. Legacy lawsuits, this. It’s all the same. We’re stuck with it until 2023, when the next incompetent governor steps in. Will it be Nungesser, Schroeder, Landry, Landrieu? Let’s wait to find out.

What a stupid fricking waste.
Now add up the cost of wasted ventilators too and lets laugh some more.

I used to think that there couldn't be a more incompetent and corrupt government than the one in Montgomery, Alabama.
Then I started reading the OT. Holy shite

This is the fault of the voters. If you aren't happy with it stop voting for these con men. But we won't, because we have feelings about statues and street names.

Weren't they recently selling those covid tents? And weren't they set up by the National Guard?

That is a ridiculous waste of money & a breakdown should be provided to tax payers
quote:
After treating 416 patients over nearly 7 months, the facility last month entered what state officials call a “warm status,” where the medical facility is no longer operating but can be ramped back up within 72 hours. It discharged its final patients in late October, according to a census count of the facility.
quote:
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is now auctioning off some of the tents on a government bidding site. Mike Steele, a spokesman for the agency, said the equipment was deemed surplus after the facility was downsized earlier this year.
quote:
Under the new “warm status,” the state expects to pay about $1.7 million in November and December on the skeleton facility, according to the documents.

This story is from April. Its worse now.
Posted on 12/9/20 at 1:22 pm to LSUJML
In April, when the State realized that we would not exceed available hospital beds in the state, 1,000 beds had been built out at Morial CC. JBE was approached by GOHSEP leadership and told that we would never exceed the need for 100 beds, let alone 1,000 beds and that we should NOT build out the second phase of 1,000 beds. He insisted we go forward so his cronies could get paid. He knowingly wasted millions of dollars to line pockets.

They were set up by Dynamic. The Guard actually designed the facility layout and devised the plan. Once the tents were not needed, some were used at testing sites. Many were boxed up. Now they are being auctioned.
Don't worry though... It's not your state tax dollars. JBE spent enough to get federal reimbursement. So it's just your federal tax dollars being wasted.

Alabama as a state is light years ahead of Louisiana. Mississippi is even better than Louisiana. Our best areas are Baton Rouge and New Orleans

OH.MY.GOD!!!!
Just when all of those horrible people who ad the audacity to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving and (soon) Christmas are going to bring UNPRECEDENTED levels of surging cases they close the temp hospital set up to handle it?!!!!!!!!! Are we going to have to spend $200 MORE million to reconstruct the hospital when the third wave apocalypse hits?!!!!!
Or is this maybe, just maybe, this whole thing has been grossly and intentionally sensationalized bullshite?
Actions speak louder than words. Wake the frick up people!
"The 'third wave" will be the worst yet! ----- takes down temporary hospital during third wave.
"Stay home. Save lives!!!" --- says mayor vacationing in Cabo San Lucas
"Gatherings of 10+ people could lead to catastrophic spread!!!" --- Newsom! Party of 25. Your table is ready.
