the company I work for feels content giving 1% raises for the last 6 years. We are losing people left and right but they just don't seem to get it.
They get it

Ouch. That's only $12k for the average OTer.
Did you quit yet?

I don't get people bitching about getting a raise or not getting a Christmas bonus.

Don't you have to pay employee and employer taxes on a bonus? I think that's how it used to be so getting it in a raise works better for you.

This...
My bonus is taxed at the higher IRS bonus rate, so it gets taxed to hell and back! Example: I was given a gift that was worth $180; however, the taxes on that gift was $65 - that's a 35% tax rate! You will probably see more of the money through the 6% salary increase.

Honestly, I will give up poins on a Christmas bonus for a larger raise in a heartbeat.. A raise is progress in your life...a Christmas bonus is beer money...

My bonuses get taxed at 49% up here, it's brutal. I end up deferring them to my 401k and just paying myself more through the year so I can somewhat shelter myself.

You need to hire a tax professional. Because you're clueless.

Thats how much is withheld, not taxed.

I understand how it works. I eventually get a good chunk of that back but it's not for over a year as our bonuses pay out in January. I'd rather make a lump 401k contribution and then catch up on cash throughout the year.

Be happy with what you received. It could be worse.
No Christmas bonuses at my company. 60 % + turnover within the 1st 6 months and merit increases, providing one does an OUTSTANDING job are maxed out at 2 %.
