The ship dropping anchor is the thing that confuses me and I think would be wrong. There's a current that is taking the kid out easily 5+ mph. If you're stationary, and he's moving, that makes more distance. You want to move with him at the waves speed. If there's a strong current there, you want to just turn off the motor, not drop anchor, and let the waves take you to whatever direction he's likely headed.

There’s no evidence there was a strong current. And we don’t know when they dropped anchor. It could have been well after search and rescue and rescue arrived.

I definitely don’t. I wasn’t knocking the coast guard. Just thinking things are able to move faster than they do, apparently.

Stupidity killed that boy. His own
Side height wasn’t even close to main point nor was I saying kid wasn’t responsible for his fate. I am also not going say a teenager on a senior trip doing something stupid while drunk deserves this fate to the point of completely dismissing what looked initially to be half arse actions and planning by a boat marketing and selling night time booze and party cruises on the ocean to 18 year olds.
Since it’s the Bahamas there probably will be no criminal or civil consequences for boat as I doubt they had stringent safety requirements to follow, but at a minimum there should be business consequences. The company putting trip together for recent high school graduates should also do better at vetting the safety standards of boats they book including the rescue/safety equipment on board for night time party cruises like this.

Rest in peace to the kid. Hope the family can find solace.

So you’re saying let’s blame everyone except the dumb decision of a teenager.

Where is the company based out of? If the Bahamas, then keep on keeping on. Nothing needs to change. If you are going to jump off a boat, don't be expecting to get saved immediately.

There's a pretty good safety standard called don't jump off the ship while it's underway

What is it with you people? The kid jumped. He wasn’t pushed, he didn’t fall, a wave didn’t sweep
Him overboard. For whatever reason, he willingly JUMPED off the boat. That’s not the ships fault.
Here’s a business consequence for you. NO ONE UNDER 21 ON THE BOAT.
Then you can bitch about how your 18 year old “adult” children who can serve in a war can’t even go on a booze cruise.

I feel awful for the family. After sifting through some of the posts, some of you have no tact, compassion, or delicacy.

He jumped into the open ocean at night after drinking. How dumb can you be?

I’m not looking to blame anyone…. A tragedy happened…. Something that could potentially happen again.. all I’ve said on this today is that I feel the response from what I was told was inadequate and if it wasn’t could potentially however so slightly saved this young man and that it behooves anyone doing these trips to look deeper at the subcontracted companies. That’s it. Y’all’s weird obsession with a potential lawsuit is odd.
A tragedy did not take place, a consequence did. It’s sad and I feel for the parents. We all know what liquid courage and youth combined can lead to. However, when you do dumb things like this, the consequences may be severe. Do you think about the emergency response personnel wanted their lives in danger over a dumbass dare? How about the crew or the passengers? What if they were able to rescue him, are you okay with him being jailed and fined to reimburse the rescue operation payed for with tax dollars? Should the crew and business be able to sue his parents for putting them in that situation. Yes, pray for him and his parents, but the onus is on him and his friends that put everyone else in that situation.
Edited for auto correct on dare from date
