New Zealand just marked 100 days with no new domestic COVID-19 cases.

The country of 5 million people implemented strict lockdown measures in April. All restrictions on New Zealand businesses were lifted by June, but its borders remain closed to outside visitors.

Now, bars, restaurants, and sporting events are open for business across New Zealand — but health officials say they're staying vigilant for another possible outbreak.

New Zealand took an early, aggressive approach to stop the spread of the virus. The country of 5 million people entered a hard lockdown in April that closed schools and nearly all businesses, including food delivery. By June, most restrictions were lifted in the country, but New Zealand's borders remain closed to foreigners and incoming New Zealanders are required self-quarantine for two weeks after arriving.

What sucks about this is that we could have been in a similar situation as New Zealand because we once had a plan in place that resembled what New Zealand did.

In 2005, President George W. Bush unveiled an ambitious $7.1 billion plan to get America ready for a possible pandemic.

Bush's plan called for early detection, international cooperation, stockpiling of vaccines and medical equipment, and public education about pandemic prevention.

And all it takes is 1 person with Covid to enter and then the wildfire is set off. It’s inevitable

If it was Bush’s plan but we’ve had both a dem and republican since him then who are we supposed to be upset with?
New Zealand is an island nation with like $5 mil people and already had a super strict immigration policy. What they could do and what the US could realistically do is absurd to compare.
That’s like comparing the US military capability to New Zealand’s...

Thats why. We know why that won't be done here.

Well that's racist. #BoycottNewZealand

What sucks is you should be so much more intelligent given the fact that you don’t have to worry about walking.

It’s weird to me they want 0 cases honestly. There’s a lot of doubt how effective a vaccine will actually be, I don’t really understand their plan? As said already also, you get one asymptomatic person going to something like a rugby match and it’ll take off like an uncontrolled wildfire.

If only the US would’ve been able to do what a fricking island nation with a million more people than L.A. was able to do.

Please, elaborate on this for us

Oweo, this thread is fricking terrible
New Zealand is one of the most isolated nations in the world. It is in the middle of nowhere and has more sheep than people. It has one international airport

it's possible to achieve no cases with the above + living on an island

The first case of COVID was reported in the US on January 19th, at that point a travel ban should have been put into place.
If all of a sudden all of the Europeans were not allowed to enter into New York, NY wouldn't have had it nearly as bad as they did.

the fact that your revisionist history has the US closing down travel to Europe in January shows how realistic this "we could have been NZ!" plan is

Oh my god you fricking idiot
This thing was already in America by December. Fact.

Do they allow protesting in New Zealand though?
Posted on 8/9/20 at 3:57 pm to OweO
The vaccine will probably be 70-80% effective. Coronavirus will never be eliminated. New Zealand is not obtaining any herd immunity. They are going to have to keep their borders closed for years.
The US is going to be one of the first countries that doesn't have to worry about coronavirus when herd immunity, the vaccine and natural immunity is combined.

The “ we should’ve locked down for 2 weeks in March nationwide” gets me every time...
As if that would’ve changed anything once everyone re-emerged from lockdown
It’s gonna run it’s course no matter what we do
