Crossing the street here can be challenging any time, and you might be even less likely to notice that honking cab or zooming bicyclist if you're looking at your phone.

Now, it could become illegal to do so.
A bill in the New York State Senate seeks to ban pedestrians from using portable electronic devices while crossing the road. Fines would range from $25 to $250.
The statewide ban would include texting, checking emails, and browsing the internet, with exceptions for emergencies.

"It's hard not to notice the number of people texting while walking, and downright alarming to see people continuing their texting while crossing the street," Liu told CNN. "We want New Yorkers to know it's OK to wait the 5 seconds."

A 2019 report by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimated that 6,227 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2018, the most in almost three decades.
The report cited "the large growth in smartphone use" as a possible reason.

Agreed. I have no problem with that law. It certainly would cut down on lawsuits in accidents where the texting pedestrian was injured.

Yep. It doesn't just affect the pedestrian.

At least once a week, I'll see someone crossing the street without looking up and a driver having to brake pretty hard. I"m honestly surprised more people aren't hit here.

You would think the potential of getting hit by a car would be motivation enough.

How's about they start with not killing babies and, you know, work their way up from there?

This.

It's why I think this law is absurd. Not really the law itself. The need for this to be a law. How hard is it to put the phone down and look both ways?

Working next to a college campus, I have to really really watch when driving out of the area because kids will just walk right out across the crosswalk (and sometimes the street itself) without looking up from their phone. All about a law like this.

Anything that gets people off their phone more is a step in the right direction. The biggest epidemic we are facing or about to be facing with kids raised on IPhones and IPads from age 3 and up is an addiction to constant stimulation, an obsession with social media and belief that what’s on social media is reality and the complete lack of and inability to partake in interpersonal communication. The difference between the select few kids whose parents have withheld devices from them and those whose parents have used devices to keep their children from bothering them is alarming.

I can definitely get behind this. it's like the whole "look to both sides of the road" concept is no longer taught to children.

They should also get on jaywalks, and slow walkers (that arent clearly hampered in some way). it's like they hussle to get to the edge, and then just slow down to cross.

Arghhhgh I hate pedestrians

This law will be repealed in about 90 days when non-white people start receiving the majority of the fines
