Houston can’t touch LA in terms of its creative/art/music scene, for one.
No arguement but Houston’s food scene is legit as well

If the pay is comparable, I would say NYC.
You won't need a car, which will save you a lot of $. Rent prices will be high, but the city is much more centralized and easily navigable than LA, in my experience. I've only visited LA, never lived there, but the people I know from there/surrounding areas all say that traffic is a nightmare. MTA in NYC needs to get their shite together, but a 20 min train ride to work is still better than a 30-45 min drive in a car. Plus, NYC is THE cosmopolitan city of the US, if that is something of importance to you. There is plenty of cultural capital in LA too, but NYC is the epicenter of the US and one of the best in the world in terms of culture/arts/general conglomeration of very talented and intelligent people. I'm not saying everyone you would meet there is talented or intelligent of course, FAR from it. But there is a reason why so many ambitious people still flock to that city.

Both are crowded, expensive as hell, and run contrary to my politics and beliefs.
San Diego County and Orange County have large Republican voter bases and both have hundreds of square miles of beautiful beaches and a terrific climate
Sorry your feelings get in the way of the facts

downtown is underwealming relative to the population and primarily a work-only place, nothing seems authentic or organic, just strip center fakeness forever.
Have you been lately? Downtown LA is hot!

but a 20 min train ride to work is still better than a 30-45 min drive in a car.

If you're young and single, New York is a great place to live. It's very sophisticated and you'll learn A LOT living there. I would take New York.
