There are pros and cons to both obviously.

Where in each city would you be commuting? What's the pay for each?

If each job were downtown and pay was the same, I'd prob rather live in Manhattan.

If the job was outside of the city center, I'd prob rather live by the beach

This is what it would come down to for me...

All things being equal, if you enjoy getting out and doing outdoorsy stuff like hiking, water sports, etc. definitely go with LA.

If you're content with what Central Park and the areas immediately outside the city have to offer, I'd go NYC. I mean, yeah, technically NYC has beaches, but its overall outdoors scene can't hold a candle to LA's.

i love new york. asked the same question in my twenties, i'd have chosen it.

but now i think i'd choose to live in L.A. sunshine, beaches, and mountains not too far away.
and i have family there too.

What part of LA? That makes a huge difference especially if you have to commute to live somewhere nice.

people keep saying LA because of winter, but summers in NYC are also hotter than most of southern California

It's just more moderate all around which is great

The only places I would live in NYC would be Manhatten or Brooklyn. Average rent is about $3K meaning I would want to make more than $175K as I like to live comfortably.

NYC also charges a local income tax which is prohibited by CA law

In LA, the rent is cheaper by about $500/month

Offered a job in both.

Where are you moving?

We literally just experienced winter weather for more than 6 months here in NYC. Unless the pay is significantly different, move to LA.

That chart shows the median but you don't have to spend $3000 or make that much to have a good lifestyle here. You can get a nice apartment in Manhattan for around $2300. You get rid of your car and you'll be more than comfortable with a household salary of $120k-ish

NYC and it’s not even close IMO.
In LA you’ll spend half your life in a car.

I’m shocked at the number of responses for NewYork. I thought it would be LA in a landslide.

New York is a lot of fun and imo a much better city.

But LA has better weather and I prefer the west coast laid back attitude

Living in LA sucks if you have to commute. If you work in a nice place where you would also want to live, its fantastic. Really depends on the circumstances. Dealing with New York is easier because you don't need a car.
