To put this in perspective, the mortality rate from flu in 2018 was 9.1%.
That doesn't sound accurate. I have trouble believing that 1 in 10 people that contracted the flu, died.

Well that’s just fine unless you’re in the 9.1%.

I was mistaken. The death rate from the flu in 2018 wasn’t 9.1%. According to the CDC it was 10.8%.

quote:

Nationally, mortality attributed to P&I exceeded 10.0% for four consecutive weeks, peaking at 10.8% during the week ending January 20, 2018. As it does for the numbers of flu cases, doctor's visits and hospitalizations, CDC also estimates deaths in the United States using mathematical modeling.

You were and still are mistaken. Please read the whole article. That rate isn't the death rate for flu.

It's estimated that almost 45 million people were symptomatic with flu and 61,000 died. So, more like .15%

Hopefully Phase 2 of the new Trade Deal with China prohibits them from transporting that here.

I guess Google is lying again. I went to a Google and searched “mortality percentage flu 2018” and the result was what I posted from the CDC.

I think the problem lies in your inability to comprehend what the CDC article is saying. However, I provided the CDC link with the numbers related to the flu from that season. Honestly, you can just use common sense to know that 1 in 10 people getting the flu aren't dying. That's just stupid.

This thread has sent me down the rabbit hole of reading about the deadliest infectious diseases in history.

Why does this kind of stuff always seem to originate in China?

A shitload of people and open air markets with animal blood everywhere.

If you put a ton of people literally on top of each other and say "frick it" to basic hygiene it's a perfect breeding ground for exotic viruses to infect.

For the sake of comparison, the Spanish Flu epidemic had a mortality rate between 10%-20%.

If seasonal flu had a mortality rate of 10%, this country would be in a crisis.

Obesity kills hundreds of thousands every year.

Opioid overdose kills tens of thousands every year

It’s only scary when it originates from Asia or Africa and you bleed out your anus.
