There are now more than 200 cases, mostly in Wuhan, though the respiratory illness has also been detected in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Three people have died. Japan, Thailand and South Korea have reported cases.

Health officials have identified the infection, which first appeared in Wuhan in December, as a strain of coronavirus. They say it has led to an outbreak of viral pneumonia, but much about it remains unknown.

Although the outbreak is believed to have originated from a market, officials and scientists are yet to determine exactly how it has been spreading.

What we know about the virus

2019-nCoV, as it's been labelled, is understood to be a new strain of coronavirus that has not previously been identified in humans

Coronaviruses are a broad family of viruses, but only six (the new one would make it seven) are known to infect people

Scientists believe an animal source is "the most likely primary source" but that some human-to-human transmission has occurred

Signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties
People are being advised to avoid "unprotected" contact with live animals, thoroughly cook meat and eggs, and avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

Lunar New Year is coming up as well, big travel time in China.

CDC has already deployed teams to conduct screenings of all flights coming from China at at least 3 major U.S. airports.

The regular flu has already killed hundreds in this country this year

But the media has a thing for exotic virus fear mongering.

Why does this kind of stuff always seem to originate in China?

Idiots don't know the best path is to start in India and stay under the radar. Save up points and go full throttle once Greenland and Morocco are finally infected.

Probably because they have over a billion people, and enough of a media influence to have reports on it. I'm sure other countries have viruses that spread, but are "contained" becuase there is no media reports or much travel at all.

The only thing the Chinese can come up with on their own is new viruses and fireworks.

We can be secure in the knowledge that The Government of the United States of America is completely unified and committed to the safety and security of We the People of the USA, and that, in furtherance of this objective, the international borders of the USA are hermetically sealed to prevent infected persons from arriving here.

Your Government is committed to keeping you safe.
