New law removes soft drinks from SNAP-eligible purchases in Utah

quote:

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — At the start of the new year, Utahns will no longer be able to use SNAP benefits to buy soft drinks.

A new law passed by the Utah legislature earlier this year takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026, preventing those on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from using those funds to buy sugary carbonated drinks.

quote:

"The SNAP program helps those who are facing food insecurity and in need of nutrition," said Rep. Chevrier. "We don't want to undermine health and fuel chronic disease by subsidizing the purchase of sugary drinks. This innovative change will improve our nutrition program and overall health outlook in the state of Utah."

I would imagine that Utah has one of the lowest rates of SNAP usage nationally.

It’s a start, the govt should hire a nutritionist and based on healthy and unprocessed foods a comprehensive list of eligible items should be established

The last time a thread like this was started, a bunch of people came into the thread to claim it is “big govt” and “anti-freedom” to support restrictions like this. Most of these posters were from NOLA, north BR, Shreveport, etc.

You'd be right. At 4.8%, utah has the lowest snap utilization in the country. Nationwide average is around 12%.

They can make their own.
Make the syrup...take sugar or a similar product. Hit it with water from a fizz maker.
A Soda Stream or any other device that uses CO2 cartridges to add fizz to water are simple and have been around for decades.

States should be highly restrictive on benefits and encourage those on the dole to move to more generous states.

Good move, Utah
