Think about the sheer volume of F series fords sold.

Starting in 2024:

732,139
726,624
638,340
726,004
797,422
896,526
909,330
896,764
820,799

I hear you, and that's why I asked for personal opinions like yours, which I value more.

However, that internet chatter also means that not as many lawyers are paying for search optimization on the RAM transmission. There must not be as much money in it for them.

The ZF is the last thing I would worry about in the Ram platform. Solid transmission.

Only issue we have had with the Hurricane in my wifes Jeep was the thermostat. They overcomplicated that design with an electric ball valve instead of a regular old thermostat.

Had a 2018 F-150 with 5.0 and ten speed tranny. went out at 80k. 10k later timing chain and transfer case.

Traded it for a 2024 Sierra with 3.0 duramax. no issues yet.

Not worried about the ZF. I used to occasionally drive a 2014 with that trans (first year in a Charger) and I liked it. The valve body in that trans was changed out under warranty, then it had no problems thereafter for as long as my sister owned the car. I was the main operator of that car for about three years, my sister bought it for my mother then took it back when my mother quit driving and my nephew started driving.

The Hurricane engine I am not as much worried about but it is always better to not be an early adopter of something new.

suddenly I am hearing about lifter problems due to DOD.
nothing sudden here. this has been a problem since mid 2000s orv whatever. however, a simple device that turns off dod eliminates this issue.

Just hit 80k and so far so good. It does shift a little weird on occasion but I think it is just a characteristic of the transmission.

My transmission in my 2018 went out at 80k. It would pull until fifth gear. when it went to 5th it would slip like it was in neutral. changed it under warranty but had other issues a few months later. I dumped it. If the ford dealer was ready to deal with me, I would have bought another one but they didn't have the rebates GMC did.

OP, just buy the extended warranty from one of the online sellers of OEM warranties (NOT 3rd party) for less than $1k and don't worry about it. Flood Ford is the place to buy for Ford, I forget the GM dealer that sells them cheap.

FTR, Ford's implementation of the 10 speed has been a bit better statistically than GM's, but if there were truly mass problems with either, you would literally see one parked on the side of the road every day broken down due to the sheer number sold and the fact that trucks tend to rack up miles fast. Do you see dead Ford/GM trucks everywhere you go?

The GM engine lifter/cam issues do appear to be more common though.

Two Co-workers here both have 2024 GMC Canyon AT4's and both have transmission issues.

There is a lot bad chatter on the internet about the GM/Ford 10 speed trans

For reasons I'm not sure of, the GM 10 speeds have held up a lot better with fewer issues than the Fords despite a lot of the same hardware. think it's related to programming. They did have issues, but most of them were ironed out fairly recently.

The 8 speed GMs were hot garbage until a year or two ago as well. They are okay now.

Ram's ZF is a great unit. But the new motors are still having some issues.

You can also get a Tundra and get engine and transmission problems.

I haven't seen a reliable, long-lived transmission since everything went to a computer shifting module. There's a reason the guys who work in the dealership service departments are called technicians these days. Everything is a computer-controlled electronic interface. It's gonna fail, and it's gonna fail sooner than it would have had it been a good, old fashioned mechanical shift design.

I would dearly LOVE to find a new pickup with a real manual transmission just so all the computer issues could be avoided.

Is there anyone else besides Range for the 6.2 '25?

I had a 2021 F150 with the 10 speed and it was jerky and never seemed right. I think that might’ve been the first few years of the jointly developed 10 speed.

I currently have a 2024 Silverado with the 10 speed and I have just over 11,000 miles. The transmission in this truck is 100x better than the experience I had with the Ford. I’m going to attribute that to having time to work out the kinks.

Had a friend with a 2021 Silverado and he had more problems than I had with mine.

we have around (9) 2023/2024 Silverados for company trucks all with 10 speed and have yet to have any issues with transmission.

the one GMC we got did have multiple trips to dealership over hard shifting.

we have learned to buy bumper to bumper extended warranty for all our trucks because it only takes one really bad truck for you to learn.

Compared to what they were not so long ago, every single new truck is a pile of shite.

Too many gears.

Too much emissions stuff.

Too many turbos (welcome to the SUCK, Tundra!)

Too few cylinders.

To many plastic parts (plastic oil pan Ford? yes they did)

Too many wet belts (Ford, again)

You're paying more than you ever have by a wide margin, and getting a product that will nowhere near be as reliable or long lasting as they were at their peaks.

It all comes down to Federal control. Every bit of it.

Have you considered buying a 3/4 ton truck instead? The engines and transmissions across those lineups are more mature and proven. The gas engines are pretty straight forward and there’s less issues with the 10 speeds. Even the new Ram 2500 has a new 8 speed ZF now.

FWIW, I have a 2023 Ford Expedition and F-250 that have been flawless thus far and both have a different 10 speeds (10R80 vs. 10R140).

issues popping up like a leaky rear window

Re: this, what folks think is a leaky rear window is either water intrusion through brake light or what I have found most, worn out vent seals in cab which require you to remove entire rear seat to replace.

In the order of trucks I see on the side of the road from my approximately 40-50k miles a year:

1. Fords (more tilted to 3/4-1 tons)
2. Chevrolets/GMCs (the majority of 1/2 tons in USA Big 3)
3. Dodge/Ram (rare sightings)
4. Rarely see Toyotas and Nissans

I'm happy with my truck's 4R70W and my fiancée's 4L60E.
