This shite is out of control

Had a friend that works in the “service industry” say that people who go to happy hours should be tipping based on non happy hour prices.

When will this shite stop?

frick that. I usually tip more than the norm, but come the frick on. At some point these assholes should realize the actual minimum tip is $0 and be grateful for what they get.

Also, if you buy a cheap bottle of wine, you should tip at the expensive bottle of wine price, because it takes the same amount of work.

(Not really, but that is the same logic)

I always tip on what my bill should have been not a special price. If they throw in "free drinks" i add them mentally to my bill and then tip 18-20% every time I was happy with my service.

If I didn't like my service I tip 15% on the special prices

I like the "Don't just tip $1 per drink" people. frick you. It took you 45 seconds to get me my draft beer. You think you're worth more than $80 an hour doing unskilled labor?

I do this to an extent. The amount (above normal %) depends on how big the discount is, how much I consume (e.g., if I have 2 $2 beers then I'm not leaving just .80 obviously) , whether I order stuff besides happy hour specials; and if the bartender or waitress is up front with the specials and especially if s/he makes an effort to get one last order in before it expires, then I definitely increase the tip.

On the other hand, there are many times where I would have stayed home or gone somewhere else but-for the happy hour, so they should be happy the special is bringing in business.

That's just reasonable.

But I'm not going to overtip because I went to happy hour vs price gouging hour.

Yeah I tip $1 per drink unless it’s a fancy place.
This changes nothing

This shite is really simple to me

I can cook a really great steak at home and I can mix my own drinks.

I go out to be served. So when I get good service I tip really well. When I get bad service I don’t tip worth a shite. Folks in the service industry are not entitled to my money without providing good service

I will tip on normal price if the bill is reduced for a reason beyond the control of the server (i.e. manager takes an entree off because of a problem from the kitchen) but NO WAY I am tipping because of a normal discount. That is why I am eating / drinking there in the first place. If the server doesn't like it, they need to work at a place that doesn't have HH. Or schedule to not work that time.

As for the "free drinks" part. I eat at a couple of places on the regular, I tip well every time. The bartender always throws me a drink or two on him because of my consistent patronage. I am not going to tip extra for the free drink, in essence paying for it, as that would defeat the purpose.

Tell your friend to ask their boss to do away with happy hour. Then they’ll get tipped based on regular prices. But then the bar or restaurant will be pretty empty from 4-6 and she’ll be lucky to get a table or 2 during that time...or the boss will schedule her to come in later since they won’t need as many servers if nobody comes in until regular dinner time

We are lucky. Go to Europe. I was in Germany and Austria and received the absolute worst service everywhere. It couldn't be because I was American because I venture to guess most Americans tip more than usual in Europe. It made me seriously appreciate that we tip here in the States and because of that we mostly get good service. We literally spent 20 minutes trying to pay our bill before our friend tapped the "waitress" on the shoulder in a place with all of 4 tables. Then she told us that tip wasn't included which was a complete and total lie being we were in Europe. So I am happy to tip here and get good service almost all of the time.
