WBRZ
quote:

State Senator Rick Ward (R-Port Allen) has proposed creating a special taxing district encompassing East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston, and Iberville Parishes. If passed by the legislature this year, residents in the district would eventually vote on a sales or property tax that would pay for some or all of the bridge. "I just thought it would be a good opportunity for the people of this region to try and fix our own problem," said Ward.

quote:

According to a state-funded Interstate 10 corridor study, a new bridge across the Mississippi River is one of three mega-projects needed to ease congestion in the capital region. The other two are a widened interstate through Baton Rouge and a loop around the city.

Out of three proposed mega projects, they should prioritize them in this order: 1) loop, 2) widen interstate, 3) new bridge. I personally find the new bridge a waste being that the bridge there currently is plenty wide and it isn't that old.

That state senator is an idiot. Why make five parishes foot the whole bill for a new highway system that serves the southern US and southern Louisiana?

TOLL BRIDGE

quote:

A toll bridge is a bridge where a monetary charge (or "toll") is required to pass over. Generally the private or public owner builder and maintainer of the bridge uses the toll to recoup their investment, in much the same way as a toll road.

Louisiana is still trying to figure out how to attach a toll to your W2. We have to make sure that Bobby Wellington pays fair share to cross the bridge while Gravy and his EBT entourage just across the bridge for free

Well the loop needs another place to cross. Unless they go north, and that bridge would need major improvements.

Good thing they spent all that money on a bridge that connects St. Francisville and New Roads to relieve that massive problem.

Which bridge currently there is wide enough and isn't that old? Hopefully not the Horace Wilkinson built in the 60s.

Yeah, people from these few parishes are causing all the congestion. Especially those of us commuting across the river in our big rigs.

I thought the same. A couple hundred thousand people now have to pay for interstate commerce.

I’m sure those politicians won’t spend that tax money on something more useful like programs for the disadvantaged, the hongree, and white privilege training.

Lake Charles has two bridges and much smaller than the BR I10 bridge that haven't been repaired in eons. This bridge is okay.

And the video indicated that we would have to pay more taxes and maybe even a toll on top of that. Wow.

Article mentions a new I10 bridge not a loop or bypass bridge.

The loop would need a new bridge to work as intended. SBR/Ascension folks would use the future bridge and NBR/LP folks could use the current “new” bridge.
Should’ve put their money into a bridge in BR instead of that useless bridge in St. Francisville. Peak time traffic on that bridge is lower than minimal traffic on the new bridge. It sees so little traffic that it probably wouldn’t warrant running multiple ferry boats at peak times like they run in Plaquemine/St. Gabriel ferry.

Loop would not be effective without another river crossing.

The existing interstate within BR is "wider" (more lanes) than the bridge. If you believe the bridge is wide enough, then the rest of I-10/12 in BR is also.

On the surface, this sounds logical, but I can argue against it also. What benefit does north LA gain from a BR loop or a MS River Bridge or widened I-10 thru Baton Rouge?

But all the proposed loop studies had new bridges. You can't have a loop without a new bridge. The bridge could be a step in that process. You will have to hook back up to I-10 eventually. And LA-1 is not the answer.

You might want to tweak your title, OP. It reads like this is a thread about the state of Mississippi wanting a bridge across the state.
