Unless they're offering good deals. We got our '14 brand new because the low mileage one and two year old ones were selling for $35-37K. The sticker on ours was $40K (yeah, slumming it in an XLT,) but they offered several rebates that put it down to $35K. I negotiated another $1000 off and an extended warranty and felt very happy with the choice. I got a brand new Explorer and for less than a used one, and it had 12 miles on the odometer.

As for the Explorer itself, I love it. Plenty of room, good power (we have the base V6,) good gas mileage (avg. 25 mpg highway,) SYNC is super easy to use, the leather seats are comfortable, the navigation is simple, and we've had no issues after a year.

You ask a question about engines and responses tell you how to handle your money...the OT: Where people come to get answers for questions they didn't ask.

Please get the Ecoboost. It's the same engine Ford trusts in their bread-and-butter truck, the f150. It's been around for 4 years - any kinks have worked themselves out. Anyone afraid of a Turbo engine built in the year 2015 needs to get their head out of the sand. I could make this post more eloquent but it's 12 degrees outside and I haven't had coffee.

I would make sure you actually want to own a new Ford. Owning a new Ford means you'll have to deal with a Ford dealer. From sales to service, the Ford dealers around my area seem grossly incompetent.

And I take my Yukon to the Ford place because the GM service was so bad. Just depends on your area

Yeah, I guess if you hold onto the rig for that long 15+ years then you'll absorb all the depreciation. You don't ever like having new rigs every 3-4 years?

It's a car, it'll do the same things in 4 years as it will in ten, drive from point a to point b.

All of this, I got a 2014 XLT and love it! I got dual moon roof, second row bucket seats, leather and the SYNC system is pretty awesome. I also got the extended warranty for around $1500 which includes 2 years free oil change and tire rotation.

There are very few situations where leasing comes out better financially.. Go to the money board and read some of those threads before you consider leasing if you would actually consider that.

Sound advice. Leasing is, 95% of the time, a poor choice for an individual.

To OP's question, I would stuck with the lower HP engine.

Here's the thing. What if your wife decides she doesn't like the Explorer after 6 months of driving it? Do you want to be stuck trying to sell it and you'll still take a loss on the truck even at $38K. If you lease, then you get a new SUV every 36 months, kind of like, renting with the option to buy. You can always pay off the residual at the end if you absolutely have to buy the Explorer, however, anyone that knows Finance would never do so. You're only paying for the depreciation over the term and you don't have to worry about selling the truck when you want a new ride. Now, since you have pricing already set with the Plan A buying program, you can go into the dealership to see what the invoice is in order to haggle a little more to get the best monthly payment. Sales tax is always rolled over on a monthly basis when you lease, as opposed to rolled over into the Principal amount of the loan upfront, which will save you money in the long run. Keep your money in the bank and put the least amount down to keep your monthly payment to where you want it. Always demand to have the dealership waive all the bullshite fees, like the security deposit if you have good credit. Before you sign, be sure to ask what bank the dealership uses on their leases. They usually hold a point or more on the APR depending on credit. Call the bank before you sign to make sure the dealership is not lying. If you have "Vanilla Credit" 720 plus beacon you hold all the cards.

I feel slimy just from reading that.

Buy- don't lease. New- not used. In today's Truck/SUV market it makes no sense to buy used. And I have never heard of a scenario for a personal vehicle where leasing is the better option.

I know, I hated writing that.

That said, I try to give car advice appropriate to the situation.

Another 60HP would be nice, but it's still gonna be an Explorer, not a track vehicle.

Have a 13 xlt with the 3.5L NA

Gets good mileage, rides really well and I felt it was the best value in the class

We've only got 35k miles on it but it's been flawless so far except for some type of electronics recall

OTOH, I have the 3.5 EB in my truck and it's been great also

No problems either but about the same amount of miles
