Im getting close to the point where i need to get a new roof for my house. How do i go about getting the insurance to pay for some of this? or do i have to pay all out of pocket? was just getting my feelers out because its gonna run me over 10k im sure

Unless a major hail storm or tornado damaged it, then it's your deal.
How old is the roof? It its a 20 year shingle roof that's 20 years old, insurance isn't gonna touch that.

I guess I will start this...Why do you think insurance should pay for your roof?

It's an unspoken rule that insurance pays for all roofs. Just find some roofing company to find hail damage.

Set your house on fire
Pray for a tornado, hail or hurricane
That's pretty much it
ETA: Invite friends over to hit golf balls onto your roof....will look like hail damage

They wouldn't pay any of the cost for my new roof, in fact they wouldn't renew the policy unless I got a new roof.

it is the first of March and I have a feeling there will be some sever weather rolling through here within the next few weeks. Maybe you will get "lucky" and have some hail damage from a storm.

Interesting. I have several rental properties and I've only paid for roofs when I didn't know better.
Hell, before I sold my last house I had a new roof put on almost 2 years after the hail storm came through. I'm guessing you have AllState or something. If you have a good policy with a good company and find a roofing company that can locate damage (like dings on flashing) then you are all set. If you have a roof for 10 years it is almost a certainty you will have at least one decent hailstorm come through during that timeframe.

Insurance companies aren't that dumb. They're going to ask when the hail damage happened, then they check meteorologic records for that area to verify that there was actually hail that occurred in the area around the time frame you said the damage happened. And it better have happened in the past year because you've only got a one year statute of limitations for property damage claims in LA.

Insurance is only going to pay anything for it if the roof needs to be replaced due to damage caused by wind or hail. If it needs to be replaced just due to normal wear and the age of the roof, thats a maintenance item....insurance doesn't pay for maintenance.

Get a metal roof and slap it on top of the old

This... Many homeowners think just because there roof starts leaking or it's getting old that insurance companies owe them a new roof. Insurance companies are only responsible for paying for storm damage not for normal wear & tear. Hail has to be large enough to leave bruise marks on the shingles & damage most of the slopes on the house to warrent a full replacement.

Get you a glass tile Solar Roof from tesla. Supposedly more durable than asphalt shingles and pays for itself in a few years.

That's what my grandfather did. His took some damage, and he had to pay out of pocket some for a new one. He worked with the contractor and asked if he could just put metal on top of the old instead of paying for the removal and replacement.

The roofing company doesn't locate the damage. The insurance adjuster does.
