Yeah it’s a nice place. Just don’t tell everyone. Also if you move there, you’ll need a golf cart.

I just got back from their Boo and Brew.

In all seriousness, New Roads is a diamond in the rough. So many small towns in that part of the state are run down shite holes. New Roads is pretty nice.

I still can’t figure out how such a small town was able to not only get its own Mississippi River bridge, but also a makeshift bypass that sits on enough right of way that they could build an expressway if they wanted to.

That’s an impressive amount of political clout

It was a long time coming

I think alot of it was due to the nuclear plant across the river and potential evacuation needs

It takes even more political clout to refuse to build a bridge that a governor offers.

In 1962, Governor Jimmy Davis needed to build a bridge to reward some political supporters. The obvious choice was to connect New Roads and St. Francisville. However, the “Powers-that-Be” at the time refused the offer. The rationale was that such a bridge would bring in riff-raff who would be hard to control - an unacceptable outcome.

So, the governor built the Sunshine Bridge instead - at the time, essentially, connecting two cane fields.

The hood in new roads stays on their side and it’s really not that bad, just looks rough because they refuse to keep it up and the city basically told them not on our dime.

There’s a lot of milfs there.

It's an easy one, due to only barge traffic. The connection seems to be a good one, it's helped both sides of the river.

Nearly all of the New roads women I know from 20s-50s kiss hello. Usually just the cheek, but they will sometimes give a peck on the lips.

You want to get yourself in trouble? Take your wife to that little breakfast spot across from the bank right after church and forget to tell her.

Not many folks know that story.
Yep, sonic franchise told Glen the owner at that time he had to stop selling fried chicken to keep the sonic name because sonic doesn't sell fried chicken. It really was because of popeyes, they still failed in town twice. He gave up the sonic name called the place big boys well because he was a big guy. He sold it probably close to 2 years ago. It still operates as big boys now.

I lived there in the 80s on the island side and have family that still lives there. Too say it has grown exponentially might be an understatement. For a teen growing up there in the off-season was soooo boring, didnt even cable tv. It was very very quiet. Summer weekends were a blast. It was either swimming every day or fishing and those got boring quickly. The older i get though, the more i would love to get that serenity back. The I10 bridge in Port Allen is also not the great drive you may think it is because theres usually a wreck on it and taking 190 bridge might be your best bet on mowt days of your commute. If you are raising children out there you would have to enroll them in Catholic High Pointe Coupee because Rougon is really not a choice and dont think false river academy is much better. It really has gotten over priced in my opinion and nowadays on summer weekends you got drunk boaters that make it dangerous for everyone else who's trying to enjoy it. They also had a cafe in the town area that tried to have a weekly drag queen reading hour or something like that and i believe the local townsfolk ran all of them out. Good or bad, thats how most of the folk are. They're very friendly and will invite you over for cook outs and celebrations. Saying all of this i would definitely retire there if i could find a place on the island side that was actually on the river.

Well the funding for it started in the early 80's, only took 30 years to get all funding and built. But if you thing logistically it could be a great place to improve La10 from 61 to I55. Also if they would do some upgrades to LA1 from Alex to the bridge it could possibly help some Baton Rouge traffic.

Depends….. my parents lived on false river in New Roads for 35 years. They just recently sold and moved back to Baton Rouge. Mostly because they are getting older and the New Roads Hospital is a joke.
It’s a small town with small town people.
Crime was starting to pick up. The getto is just right across the tracks.
We had a blast for many years out there though.

IIRC, the place across from the Regions Bank is where the Drag Brunches were. Good food, super slow service, and horrific coffee. I think the new Hot Tails is going in next door so parking was going to get harder during dinner hours too. The drag brunches were a hot topic on the OT but I honestly don't think the locals cared very much.

Different breakfast place but Dough and Joe's seems to be doing very well though. Place is packed on weekends and any time there's something going on at that church. Parking is a lot easier since it's on a side street and not directly on main.

Just like the rest of the state, there are only old beat up roads. No new roads.

It's a small rural hospital. There's a big primary care practice, an ER, but not many specialists there. Probably similar in size to Marksville ...maybe a little bigger than St. Francisville. So probably have Baton Rouge or Lafayette based specialist rotating out 1-2 days a week.

I don't know anything about their ER, but it's a good thing they have one. I'm sure the more complex patients are being patched up and sent to OLOL in Baton Rouge. That's typical of smaller suburban hospitals anywhere though.

IMO Baton Rouge area needs a larger regional hospital on the north side though - maybe Zachary's Lane Memorial can be developed or affiliated with BRG or OLOL.

I think the one in Gonzales is going into that role for the south side. It's getting a lot more doctors and specialists. I'm sure they'll do a big construction project within the next decade too.
