I had hoped for a better leader for my Roman Catholic friends.
This guy is not off to an impressive start.
First, the Pope is only infallible when giving statements ex cathedra and it's only been done about 7 times in 2000 years. It's usually only done to define a dogma of the church
Second, Catholic opposition to the death penalty started about 60 years ago with Paul VI and only increased once PJPII was elected. This is from 1995:
quote:
It is clear that, for these purposes to be achieved, the nature and extent of the punishment must be carefully evaluated and decided upon, and ought not go to the extreme of executing the offender except in cases of absolute necessity: in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society. Today however, as a result of steady improvements in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically non-existent

Pope Leo XIII hasn't made any statements ex-cathedra.

If you are truly Pro-Life, you are against all forms of humans intentionally ending life prematurely.

I am also pro-capital punishment for certain crimes.
There is Zero inconsistency in those positions.

Our country was literally founded on this principle

In Genesis 2:15, God places Adam in the Garden of Eden "to work it and take care of it" (NIV). This established a foundational precedent for humans to be nurturers and managers of nature on God's behalf
Im pretty sure God would hate us destroying forests and polluting oceans and anyone that gets mad when people say we should work on reducing doing those things would not be smiled upon.
I say this as I'm having 40 acres clear cut currently
But I will plant more trees in its place.

That was added to the pledge in 1954. The founders had nothing to do with that.

You will find 90% of this board defines conservatism as "stuff liberals dont like".
We live in the sportsmans paradise. Anyone that fishes or hunts should make maintaining nature one of our top priorities.
And im not talking about carbon capture pits

The Pope lives behind walls in a guarded community but wants to tell everyone else to live amongst the criminals.
This is why I'm Baptist.

I don't care what message you personally discern from the Bible. I'm not changing my opinion that the Pope should always work very hard to never do or say anything that involves politics. Why? Because he can't win if he does. Either one large group or another will be very angry. And, the enemies of the Catholic Church, and they are everywhere - even here - will always be ready to use whatever political statement the Pope may make against him.
Pope speaking politics will hurt the Church 100 times out of 100.

Man, as a Christian, I'm sure glad I don't have to look to some dude in a funny hat for religious guidance.

Apparently you don't. Why are you in other peoples business about what they have in their lives.

I'm Christian and Catholic and we don't look to the Pope for any type of religious guidance.
The Pope is the lineage of St.Peter, whom Jesus ordained to protect the Church from the Gates of Hell.

We have the Catechism. There is no need to look to the Pope on a daily basis for anything. The last time the Pope issued an official Catholic ruling was back in 1950.
Of course, if you would like to argue that you don't look to the Church at all for any type of religious guidance, well, then, that would puzzle me.
