I agree that the LC is built a lot better than most Toyotas and that alone is a selling point. It’s basically a 3/4 ton chassis to support up-armored modifications similar to the fleet-only Suburban 3500HD.
But the sheer size and weight of the newer LCs might make it inferior to the more primitive base 4Runner TRD off the pavement. Even more so compared to the TRD-Pro or Wrangler Rubicon. The LC’s have gotten way too big.
The technology is also kind of dated for the price. Overall I think it’s a bad value.

That's a far cry from your original "it isn't what it used to be" line. They are more capable than most other factory vehicles off road regardless of size.

Oh I know that it isn’t what it used to be.
I learned how to drive in a rusty old 40 series with a cracked engine block. I’ve owned a J80, and I’m very familiar with the J-100s and J-200s.
For off roading, they are most certainly not what they used to be.

They are still one of the most capable factory vehicles offered. That is what they've always been. Your post implied they turned into incapable luxury barges. That is just false./

They have turned into bloated luxury barges.
I don’t even think they are the most capable off road SUV in Toyota’s lineup anymore.

Every vehicle is bigger and nicer than the old versions were. They are still focused on being very capable factory offroad vehicles.

I'm actually looking at both the trucks for my next vehicle. My '06 Grand Cherokee is almost done. Or I may just get a newer one.

we plan to go with the TRD Off Road Premium package.
I got an '18 TRD Off Road Premium in December, after trading in an '07 TRD Sport. I've loved it so far

Are there any new 4x4s that can actually handle moderate off-roading without mods?
Nah.
Maybe the Rubicon. Raptor still around?

Yikes. That's it. Damn.
I think I'm too low at 14"

Nah.
Are yall serious with this stuff? There are probably more capable factory offroaders today than at any other time.

~45k MSRP or above

Still comes from the factory with a solid V8, strong frame, capable suspension, automatic sway bar disconnects, lockers and a sweet selector interface. It's ridiculously expensive and plain looking, but it's still the best you're going to get in terms of the duality of a very nice SUV that's also capable of thumping its chest off road without any aftermarket mods.
ETA: but it still has the same shitty auto start option available on the 4Runner. No clue WTF Toyota was thinking with that.

They level when you put a pay load in the bed, baw. Otherwise, the arse end would drag.
Only because the spring rate is too soft or too Progressive. They're trying to make the rides softer in order to move vehicles off the lot. Their marketing research shows that most people that buy pickup trucks don't use them for actually picking up things.
With a high enough spring rate you'll get unnoticeable squat. Look at all the older F350 Duallys running around with loads in the rear. They're barely squatting if at all. If youve driven in them though, they're a pretty stiff ride.

If you can’t see that the 1989 can go across ditches, etc. that would tear the plastic off the front on the 2018, you’re a rahtard.
The lower plastic on the 2018 comes off with a couple bolts by the way.
