I was just referencing that I don't get how they pull off a solid axle above the center of the wheel.
I've seen some designs that involve geared housing and obviously angling the diff, just didnt think those came on the Discovery.
Oh, I got you now.
I thought you were measuring ground clearance to frame or lowest non-suspension component. I think measuring to differential is pointless as a comparative metric because its so easily changed with tire OD.
BTW, they do it with portal axles and no
Very few vehicles EVER made have portals and almost all are military. If I had the money and time I would have restored a Unimog.

I agree with this completely.
However, no other hard figures have been brought forward in this thread.
My ground clearance is probably 13" or so, but my frame is about 23"

Think that is aftermarket, brabus maybe.

I've spent copious amounts of time in the mud, and 90% of the time, it's your rear diff that gets you stopped. Then, one tire is lighter than the other, and you can just hope for some type of locker to start working.
Why shouldn't ground clearance be measured as the distance from the ground to the lowest point?

Because most people aren't in mud.

Well here in Louisiana, one can't go a mile offroading without hitting mud.
Now call me dumb, but to me, I think that people paying 30-40K for something to use offroad is just pure dumb unless a farmer/cattleman or something like that.

Sicily Island.
Plenty of trail rides too.

What does a slanted front end have to do w clearance?

Nothing. The new trucks are at the very least just as capable as the old ones based on actual numbers. But he has eyes, so the numbers don't matter.

I said as a comparative metric. Obviously, in a vacuum, it IS the most important.
In other words, if I'm comparing two vehicles, ground clearance to differential isn't important to me because I would just put bigger tires on whatever I end up with anyway

I don’t know why but I like everything about the new 4x4 but 2 things.
1. Electronic 4wd box. Let me drive forward 5 feet backwards 5 feet and hope it is locked in.
2. Electronic locking differentials.

Every vehicle is bigger and nicer than the old versions were. They are still focused on being very capable
Oh, i saw a '99 ish Z71 today its definitely higher in the front than the new trucks. Also, the approach angle for a GMC 2014 Z is 14.5 ". :. Eat shite bendejo.
Lastly, my previous post presented facts not nostalgia.

Sorry, but that's just not true. People still take them off road.

Angles are measured in degrees, not inches.

Nope. I presented actual facts.
