*New Orleans is one of the great American cities in Louisiana.

New Orleans is one of the three or four truly unique cities in America and by far the most interesting.
There are two ways that really serve as the way to view the city easily. Visit or live.
Every American should visit. Every single one. Just to experience what it is. It won't be for everyone. That's the point. That's one of the things that makes it great.
Living there is another matter. For some, like myself, it's perfect because the city itself has its own vibe and personality and you feel that and can take all of the horrible things that come with it. For others, living there would be impossible. That's ok ya know.
In my experience, those who haven't really experienced other places in a large way don't get it. Meaning the banality of strip malls and concrete that dominate most urban areas. How most American cities are all alike. That's ok too. But that's a comfort for some and the polar opposite of that being New Orleans just doesn't work for people.
The crime/culture/class crap that people spew when it comes to that city are in play elsewhere. New Orleans is kind of a raw city though, where it's openly known and discussed. Part of its charm but also part of its curse.

New Orleans is a shithole.

Just make sure it's near the end of your bucket list or you may not live to finish the rest.

Las Vegas would differ with your opinion.

New Orleans is not a clean city even outside of the quarter. There is a lack of civic pride

there's a Residence Inn, Courtyard, and Embassy Suites nearby
---All these are fine. Yes, parking garage is fine. Leave your gun at home. It'll hurt more when the baddies take it from you and shoot you with your own bullets.

Live there?
Heck no.
I actually think it's better to live there, than to just visit. The best parts of New Orleans are just the day to day living.
It's obviously not ideal to raise kids there, but I definitely want to move back later in life.

To me the above statements sound like someone who "hasn't experienced other places in a large way". There are a number of American cities that aren't all strip malls that also have significantly less crime than New Orleans. There are also other livability issues that come into play with New Orleans vs the large cities with "strip mall banality". Most of those cities have significantly stronger, more diverse economies.

You do know almost every city in America has gone through a resurgence while suburbs are declining.

This. Seattle, Denver, Portland, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Austin, Philly, Boston, New York, D.C., etc aren't even remotely strip mall cities. They all each have their own problems (climate, affordability, hipsters, etc), but few cities in America have the kinds of basic infrastructure issues that New Orleans has. A lot of cities have the crime, pollution, and bad schools, but most are able to keep their streets from having volkswagon-sized pot-holes, have water that's drinkable, and don't flood after every hard rain because they stole all the copper valves off the pumps.
