We used to make my Yat cousin say "Dog Poo Poo" for us.
He said it, "Dwaawg puu puu."

There was a video someone posted a while back of the original Scared Straight on PBS in the early 80s. The majority of the people were working class while kids in NYC and there were so many regional accents. Each borough had its own accent and then sections of Manahattan and Brooklyn had their own accents. It was even more specific than this video.
I imagine the NYC accents have largely eroded as well.
I think Kafka is talking about the Mid Atlantic accent which is how news anchors and even actors spoke with this intonation that too British to sound American and to American to sound British. Very popular in the first few decades of movies with sound.

Not being from LA, why is it that some of these folks (Yats) sound like they're from Brooklyn? Coincidence or are they yankee transplants?
Neither. Both are old port cities with similar ethnicities pouring in about the same time in their history. New Orleans carries a little Southern dialect/accent into it, but mixes with those 19th century arrivals and some of the old New World French. So its similar to Brooklyn, but we say y'all and know that "eaux" sounds like "o"

Cool video
I like all versions of the new orleans accent. The only one that annoys me is Ronnie Verges (rip). He’s like a cartoon voice of what a new orleans accent is and he was used as a pitch man for all sorts of stuff. It was and still is embarassing.

I always thought that the two biggest fake New Orleans' accents were Ronnie Verges and Harry Connick, Jr.
Harry Connick was raised Uptown and went to Jesuit but tries to pull off some over-the-top Yat accent that sounds completely f*cking fake.

When I was at lsu in the 80's, I would start to chat up a girl and if she had dat yat, I would dismiss myself with haste.

good, maybe a movie will get a south Louisiana accent right and not assume that new orleans represents all of of it

I have definitely noticed the loss of accents, myself included. Moved away for college and now I have no discernable accent unless I get back home around old friends and am drinking.

I've been to NYC a half a dozen times or so and every time I was out and met people they thought I was from Brooklyn

Good riddance. A New Orleans accent sounds like Snookie fricked a Gump....

I love NOLA accents. Besides women with foreign accents, people with the hard Yat accent from NOLA are my favorites.

I think the accent is still around- just not concentrated as much in NOLA. It's all over the north shore- and along the MS coast, for sure....

Same. Throw Cajun accents in there too.
