Found this cool video from the early 80’s that shows some of the various New Orleans accents.

It’s getting a lot harder to find the old Yat accent, the Irish Channel accent, and the Uptown Socialite accent around town, except for some of the old timers.

YouTube LINK

6 minute video.

Check the 1980’s yat chicks at the end (around 5:25 mark)!

There should be only one accent, TV/Media accent. We are all universally exposed to the same tv shows growing up. I thought this would have happened years ago.

cheers, huxtables, seinfeld, friends, lost, breaking bad, etc....all have the universal TV accent (maybe not Jesse tho)

That’s honestly the first time I heard a true Yat accent.

I have a slight accent when I get excited but my Catholic education pretty much killed it.

How they say “ward” is a good measuring stick.

For example, the 4th guy in the first 4 pronounces it “wwahd” holding the “W” sound.

The first girl holds on the “a” like “waahd”

The AA girl almost completely drops the “r” basically says “wad”

Its hilarious how many people think the flat Ted Baxter voice is the "standard" accent

This idea dominated the UK for years as the Oxford Accent (think BBC announcer, "And now for something completely different") was near-ubiquitous. However the rise of PC forced the BBC to sound more diverse, so now you'll hear a number of different announcing voices (some of them quite annoying).

Not being from LA, why is it that some of these folks (Yats) sound like they're from Brooklyn? Coincidence or are they yankee transplants?

The yat accent sounds like a Brooklyn one or very similar

I’ve never really studied accents but in the south, as a general rule, of an r is not the first or second letter in a word but occurs on the back side of the word, it is generally softened or completely dropped.

I have a theory that these stupid social media influencer videos are making girls and women all sound alike. It makes me want to live in a cave.

Lighten up, Francis.

Nobody said anything about New Orleans being “special”. It just has (had) some unique accents and I thought people on an LSU board might enjoy the video.
