To take it a step further, the entire funding package has been approved by the airlines. They have a clause in their use and lease agreement known as “Majority in interest”. It allows them to approve or reject any capital project because they will fund it through their user fees.

I heard Kenner was on the move brah but I didn’t know they were building airports.

Is the Airport profitable?
By definition, no. It is a break even enterprise.
The airport operates on a compensatory rate structure. All costs and all revenues are pooled. If a deficit the airlines kick in the shortfall, of a surplus then the airport cuts a check to the airlines.

So zero tax dollars go to the airport?
Have never researched, but besides a few majors I don't think any are profitable without tax dollars.
Im not knocking the method, I agree with doing so.

Zero local tax dollars go to it. There are the FAA grants, but those are for airfield infrastructure, like runway rehabilitations.

Do the FAA grants cover access roads ?
Posted on 9/19/19 at 8:18 pm to fightin tigers
No airports in the US are profitable, save for maybe Paine Field and Westchester.
That is because no US airports are for profit entities. Those two I listed are the only ones who operate under a PPP currently. Everything else is municipal owned, and therefore not for profit.

Thank you SM6 for always bringing facts into this discussion

Typically, no. Unless they are roadway access points necessary for the safe operation of the airport (ie for fire rescue)

If it makes everyone feel better, the new airport in Berlin is like 10 years over deadline. And may never open. So things could be worse....
Yeah, I know. Germans.

Not surprised by any of this with New Orleans
Still remember what a mess the 1984 worlds fair was.
Just name a project in New Orleans that isn’t a mess and full of corruption.

Only reason they are building the new terminal is because the NFL told them they needed it to host another Super Bowl...yup heard it here first

If that new exit is going to be years before it is built, probably a good thing this terminal continues to be delayed

So instead of making Orleans Parish residents pay for this, they're making people who can actually afford a plane ticket pay for it.
WHAT A RELIEF.

No no, he clarified, no taxes go towards the airport. FAA grants do though.

By comparison, Hobby added a 6 gate international expansion that cost $150mm. It was announced in 2011 and completed in the spring 2016.

Yeah but Houston also has IAH. Nola doesn’t have that luxury.

We're basically just smearing the feces around as much as possible at this point.
If it were up to me, Orleans Parish and the state would pay for most of this, and that wouldn't be a bad thing.
