The best store ever! I remember feeling very cool going with my parents to buy our new VHS player.

it's amazing how families had that kind of disposable money to spend on VCRs, tvs, etc.

My first Video camera and VCR were about $800 each, in the mid 80s.

New Generation was a great place to work at during my high school and college days 1982 - 1985. I worked at the one on Florida Blvd. Irwin and Joe were the owners and Ronnie ran the electronics maintenance department. Irwin's wife ran the clothing department. Irwin was the best person to work for and had the biggest heart of any millionaire I have ever known.

My memories.

First, reading through this brings tears to my eyes. BR was a great place to be in the 70s'/80s and especially so for music aficionados. Makes me long for those times.

There was a New Generation store right outside the LSU campus. It was ok. From an LP perspective, it was competing with Leisure Landing on Chimes St. Leisure Landing is the GOAT record store. Its LP selection was more limited.

The New Generation on FL Blvd was fantastic. Its LP selection began to approach Leisure Landing's but with better prices. Plus, they had great deals on other stuff.

That said, there were always very strong rumors that the products were "grey market" items. Maybe factory "seconds" or other less that perfect items.

There was a place in Metairie on the I-10 service road called Sound Treck that was awesome. It sold the old school 70's stereo equipment, TVs and other entertainment stuff. I remember they had a listening room with velvet couches and all the huge speakers you could listen to while shopping...

The owner of Audio Video Innovators in Lafayette was a long-time salesman-manager at New Generation, Darrell. Good guy.

Bought a 27" Sony Trinitron tv at NG in about 1980. Paid $1,000. It replaced a 19" Sony that was selling at the time for about $500!

That's the equivalent of $3750 today. For a TV smaller than a computer monitor that weighed 200 lbs that we would've paid $400 in todays dollars to have repaired and heated the room by 2-3 degrees.

I am all for nostalgia, and love these threads, but if I go back, I wanna bring my $280 55" 4K Hisense TV (that I have had hanging outside for 2 years) with me.

That must have been pretty short lived. I remember buying Appetite for Destruction there around 1988-89 and thats about it.

While looking at that video I found what might be a top 10 local commercial.

There was one in Lafayette on University. It was right across from campus, close to the old Hoppers.

Then they moved down Johnston past the mall if memory serves me correctly.

Your memory aligns with mine. That doesn't mean we are right, it could mean we are both faulty in the same way

The one in Lafayette was in the building that Percy Guidry Ironworks took up. It was two story if memory serves me. I seem to remember it having an escalator in the middle.

on Ambassador....next....to....wal-mart

I was with my dad at New Generation in Lafayette on Saturday, January 29, 1989. We were looking for a new camera for him when we walked over to the TV Dept. LSU was playing Georgetown in the Super Dome and when Ricky Blanton made the layup at the buzzer the whole store erupted in cheers and high fives

New Generation was like a Best Buy in a Furniture store layout with a clothing boutique in it

It was there for a while. It sticks out because that location was a lot damn closer to us than the Sharp Rd / Florida Blvd store.

Yes, that was the second location. My recollection is they built that for New Generation. Percy Guidry bought the building and converted it for their use.
