I've heard about these places for years.

What were they like? Did they sell good hifi gear?
Or were they just like Best Buy?

I'm not sure what that is, but based on the name I assume it's obsessed with its phone, hates manual labor, and is consumed by social media.

On a similar note, I'm not sure that the owner of New Generation ISN'T Jimmy Hart.

New Generation had it all! For a long time probably the best car audio selection and install team around. They had high end, mid, and cheaper selections of home audio components, TVs, VCRs, jewelry and watches, portable keyboards all with working models you could play before you buy. Hell I think they even had jeans and clothes you could buy if recall.

Looking at some of the prices of electronic equipment back in the day, it's amazing how families had that kind of disposable money to spend on VCRs, tvs, etc.

Was there more than one? I just know of the one on Florida and Sharp back in the day. It was basically the 80's version of Best Buy, where you went to buy electronics.

Buying a TV was something you saved up for.

At age 16 I want to the one in BR and used my summer job savings and got a Rockford Fosgate amp with two twelve inch woofers in a box from them and had them install it.
One of the happiest days of my teenage years.
Glad my kid is a lot smarter than me. LOL

They had one by campus, in the interior on the shopping area across from The Chimes.

I still have a working Sansui receiver I bought there as a freshman, some binoculars and 6x9 Jensons I now use in my rear home theater speaker cabinets.

And some Bose 101 and 301 speakers.

The one on Florida was like this crazy rambling cluttered version of Best Buy. It was like Best Buy in your wacky uncle's rec room.

It was great.

Growing up in BR in the late 70's, early 80's, whenever I had saved up a little cash, and had a new music need, it was off to Jew Generation. Their product selection was second to none, and great prices.

Commercial, with dude on top the sign throwing equipment to the concrete and splattering, was awesome as well.

(I think it was the Schaab brothers, and one of them owned Hoppers, Ronnie. But I'm not positive on that, so don't hold me to it.)

Best prices on electronics around. That said, there were always very strong rumors that the products were "grey market" items. Maybe factory "seconds" or other less that perfect items. They did have great prices on LPs and blank tapes and clothes! Weird how quick they disappeared. I guess the other big box stores started buying up all those grey market items.

The one on Florida was awesome with the big spotlights outside.

I liked their receipts that instead of a line for “Taxes” it was “Government’s Bite” or similar. It’s been a while.

Yes…they sold clothes. I bought my ESPRIT and Coca-Cola clothes there.

But yeah, appliances, electronics. Some friends and I would often go just to peruse the new albums…yes, vinyl albums.

They had listening rooms in the back at the Florida location, as well.

In high school I worked at the McDonalds by the Florida Blvd store. On payday I would pick up my check, deposit it in my bank (LNB) and keep $20. I would then go to New Generation and buy 3-4 albums. They had an awesome selection of albums.

They would also play an album over the PA system and have the album cover on a stand, by the register so you could know what you were listening to. I discovered Def Leppard this way.

There was one in Lafayette on University. It was right across from campus, close to the old Hoppers.

Then they moved down Johnston past the mall if memory serves me correctly.
