Went to dicks in Lafayette in January and was blown away! It was the size of a costco, the main room was your average clothes and large selection of tennis shoes.
Then you walk into what I thought was a small side room, I was wrong it was massive. This is where they have the sports and outdoors equipment and high college sports selection.
I went to the Baton Rouge location in February to buy some shoes and was disappointed, very tiny store. When I left I noticed they are moving into sears. I would assume they are copying the format from Lafayette which I think was a much better store.
Big fan of dick now since I found out how much of a better selection of shoes they have compared to academy, shoe station or the other hole in the wall locations

There used to be a field and stream next to dicks in Lafayette. When it closed Dicks took over that space. That is the area with the outdoor equipment.

If I recall, I think Dicks is redoing their stores that will include an area or something within the store where there will either having batting cages or an area where you can try out equipment.. Something like that.

Here is the article.

They are calling them "experimental stores".
Not that anyone cares, buts its also a pet peeve of mine when people start threads and is very broad in their questioning.
You ask "what exactly is this?". What is what? Its a store.

Mall of La nothing but tennis shoes and baby clothes
Pretty much. The last time I went in there I bought a box of football cards because I wanted a Jayden Daniels rookie card. I was actually looking for a LSU shirt for a 1 year old which they had, but they used to have a lot more sports equipment than they do now.
The store is/was defiantly bigger than it needed to be.

It's a new concept "House of Sports". Only a handful out there and they are around Houston. The new Mall of La store will be the first of its type in Louisiana. It's about 5x larger than a typical Dick's Sporting Goods store, which is what they have across the street on Mall of La blvd.
It's Dicks, Golf Galaxy, Field and Stream all in one big "Bass Pro" scale store. Sounds like they'll have something on the roof....some kind of playground. It's a substantial rework of the old Sear's store.

Dick's Sporting Goods is bringing one of its latest concepts to the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.
The retail giant filed a permit last month to remodel the former Sears space in the Mall of Louisiana. The permit mentions demolishing part of the building.
Dick's wants to remove the entry to the mall along with the escalators and take off part of the roof and second floor. They plan to add stairs and an elevator.
First launched in 2021, these "experiential stores" are much bigger than regular Dick's Sporting Goods stores. Dick's House of Sport stores are over 100,000 square feet, about five times larger than a typical Dick's Sporting Goods location.
This new store model gives customers a chance to try new products by offering things such as batting cages for both baseball and softball, a putting area for golf, rock climbing walls, and a multitude of turfs to try out soccer and football cleats.

The Dick’s in Lafayette is huge. I have always been Team Academy but the new Dick’s in Lafayette is unreal
Yeah the Academy in Lafayette is awesome - probably why Dick's expanded into the old Field and Stream store and expanded into it.
As crazy as it sounds, the new House of Sport at Mall of La will be even larger. I think Dick's bought F&S and Golf Galaxy and they are putting them all under one roof. It's about 5X larger than a normal Dicks.
I'm still a big fan of Academy - I just hate how inconveniently located the ones in Baton Rouge are. I loathe driving on Airline near Florida or on Siegen Lane, and that's where they built their stores in Baton Rouge. Seems like Gonzales should have one now. The Juban Crossing location in Livingston is much easier than the Baton Rouge stores - the store feels less congested and there is much easier parking. Last time we went to the one on Airline, we couldn't get a basket because homeless people kept taking them from the parking lot and never returning them.
Interesting that they are going so much larger (Dick's Sporting Goods/House of Sport). The more modern trend is smaller footprints and more locations in retail like Barnes and Noble.

How many guns did you buy from Dicks previously?

DSG is one of the few companies I've made a concerted effort to avoid over politics. The gun thing, and then the CEO going out of her way to promote abortion for employees (God forbid they pay out maternity leave) after Dobbs was just gross. Especially for a company with a huge dude/outdoor/family customer base. Just a horrendous human being leading that company.
I suspect the new concept is to ward off Scheels, which is the better company, with better people and better stores. I hope Scheels puts them out of business, but DSG has a pretty entrenched presence in the SE.

My Dicks story: several years ago, I was looking for something specific- I can’t recall now what it was, but was trying to find a local brick and mortar store that had it. It was in the days when you basically had to go to each store’s website and search rather than Google having locally available options easily accessible. No luck anywhere then I remembered we had a Dicks at the mall. So I went to their website to search. Now is probably a good time to mention I was at work. At a state agency at the time. Anyway, and I treating bit of internet history is Dicks Sporting Goids didn’t always own the domain dicks-dot-com. Today if you type that in, you are redirected to dickssportinggoods-dot-com.
So I type in Dicks-dot-com and hit enter. It never even crossed my mind that the website would be anything but the sporting goods store. Boy, was I wrong. Ever have one of those moments when things just sort of stop for a second as your brain tries to make sense of what is happening? Yeah- that’s what I had. I sat in horror as the page loaded and the video previews began. It seemed to take forever but I’m sure it was only half a second or so before I was able to close the window and try to figure out what the hell had just happened. I spent the rest of the day looking over my shoulder for the IT police to come and ask why I was accessing porn on my workstation. Never happened. That day made me question the filtering software being used if nothing else. And taught me to think through before just typing in a domain name and hitting enter. Sometimes it is better to use a search engine to find the official website.

I like dicks sporting goods.
I'm with you on that. I used to be an Academy guy, but the one in Lafayette has gone downhill. For a sporting goods store, their selection of actual sporting goods is really small. (Soccer, basketball, golf, etc) Most of the store is clothes. They also have barely any athletic clothing for kids (I have 5, 9, 11 year olds). Not to mention any time you go in there now, it's like a Disney World ride line to wait for a checkout counter. I haven't been there recently and waited less than 10 minutes to checkout.
The Dick's in Lafayette is massive and has a huge selection for every sport. I also like their app and joined their rewards program. Every few purchases I get a $10 gift card on my account, which is nice. Their app is easy to search for what you need, order it, and have it waiting for you at pickup. I also like the DSG brand clothes as you can find a lot of good stuff for half the price of Nike/UA/etc.
My kids play soccer and their soccer section is huge. I get everything we need there.
The Lafayette one also has a massive LSU/Saints/Pelicans team merch section.

Another reason why I like Dick’s is because they have a huge variety of brands no one carries besides varsity sports.
Always had to buy new balance growing up because of wide foot/high arch. Recently bought my second pair of brooks from dicks and had a nice variety I could choose from.
Will never go back to cheap new balance for an everyday tennis shoe

Many years ago when I was job hunting I applied at Dick’s and Cox. I thought that was funny at the time.
