Some folks on this thread I assume have only been to Cancun for their Senior Trip or something, staying in some hotel and hitting up Senor Frogs. I understand that they imagine Cancun that way, and think it is trash but the Riviera Maya has many very nice resorts and beautiful beaches/golf courses.

It is convenient, numerous flights and under two hours from AtL, IAH, DFW.

I actually do not understand why people pay more to travel to Florida if you are without children.

Going to NW Florida, surrounded by kids, and paying what you do for a room, drinks and average food is not my thing when
You can get much more for you're dollar in Mexico.

I travel there at least once a year and the only time I am nervous at all is when on the road. (they drive fast)

I agree 100%. We vacation with my larger family on the SC coast, and it's great. But on a per capita rate, it's basically the same as going to a nice AI in the Cancun area. I cant imagine paying more to stay in Florida...that's just me.

AI is the only way for me. I am too cheap to enjoy myself as much if i have to pay for drinks all day

This. Or they just went on a shitty cruise and got off and hung out in the crappy tourist dock area. You really didn't see Mexico if this is all you did.

There are some nice areas and nice resorts.

My millionaire friend had a small simple wedding in Playa that we all got to attend five years ago and we all had a blast. Been to two other business sales conference trips to Cabo and Alcapoco(sp) where there were lots of rich people and industry leaders in the investment world.

It sucks that some of this garbage is taking place in Cancun now, but you can't say the whole country is a third world shite hole though.
Rednecks gonna redneck though.

This shite happens every day in every major city in America in the media doesn't make a big deal out of it but when it happened in Mexico, all of a sudden it is made your headline news. Journalism these days is so pathetic I don't even watch the news anymore

Didn't figure that the cartel killings would spread to the touristy areas. Always figured it would be isolated to the border towns. The Mexican people/government are fricking themselves if they allow this to hit the touristy areas.

Did anyone bother to read the article? They attacked a government building, authorities assume it is an outlier cartel trying to show force. No "touristy" areas affect and no tourists targeted. It is still scary, but I don't think traveling to Cancun right now is going to guarantee you come back in a coffin. I'm planning to be 45 minutes south of Cancun at an all inclusive in May and this isn't going to keep me from going and enjoying myself thoroughly. Now if this keeps up consistentlat and becomes more intense/targeting some resorts, etc...then maybe I'll reconsider. Otherwise, nah.

On one hand, the distinction between Mexican destinations and Chicago is that you can spend weeks in the nice part of Chicago and not even notice that the city has a violence problem. There is just no overflow whatsoever to the parts of the city most of us spend time in. Meanwhile, the security state of Mexico, some remaining portions of Latin America, many Muslim countries, etc. is apparent. Sure, you're not scared in your resort, but your resort is absolutely paying attention to what is going on outside of its boundaries, and may make you aware of the situation too.

The other side is: How many examples of American tourists getting caught up in drug violence are you aware of? I'm talking normal tourists like us, not folks from El Paso visiting families in Juarez. There are certainly examples, but they're pretty high profile and very, very few. The same can be said for Middle East or Latin American tourism generally.

The issue, then, is the randomness. While your statistical chance of getting murdered in NOLA is may be higher than in a lot of these places, you're less likely to be blown up on a bus in New Orleans. You can avoid bad neighborhoods in Chicago, but If the Zetas want to take out a rival in a mall in Cancun that you're shopping in, it's a different story obviously. The fear is understandable, but it's not necessarily rational.

Headed to Tulum in a few weeks and taken my young kids to Akumal twice over the last few years. Never felt unsafe. Flown into CUN 10+ times and never stayed in Cancun proper. Always head south from the airport.

IMHO that area of Mexico craps all over anything in the panhandle of Florida.

yep, and his severed head was mounted on a post on the highway exiting the airport so that all the tourists could see who was in charge of things

Sure, gunmen didn't storm Carlos n Charlie's but do you still want to spend time in a place where a government office can be stormed by gunmen and shot up? I'm sure tourists are still perfectly safe but to act like that's not a problem in a place like Cancun is laughable.

Mexico sounds about as safe as New Orleans.
