It's common knowledge that Mexico is a crime riddled shithole.

Yes. It's a third world shithole. It's not an exotic hidden gem that no one knows about.

I'll respectfully disagree in classifying the entire country as a "third world shithole"

The large majority of Mexico is actually quite nice and generally safe. I will be sad if this keeps up, the wife and I were planning on going to Chichen Itza.

Agree. I have traveled to various parts of Mexico for business to both coastal and interior regions. Pretty much reminds me of West Africa. I'll pass on a vacation there.

Went to Belize in July and it was an awesome vacation.

Not aware of any ships that stop in Cancun.

Are you thinking Cozumel?

It's funny how this scares people off but there are worse things happening in Chicago, New Orleans, LA, etc and people don't think twice about visiting those cities

When I visited Mexico (Cancun) - almost 20 years ago, it was unheard of for the tourist areas to be affected. Then the violence started around the Pacific tourist areas - now it's at the Mexican Riviera.

This means the government really can't stop it - if they could, they would because tourism is the lifeblood of some of these regions.

I don't particularly care to spend any time in the FQ either. I love NOLA, but I wouldn't be out late in the FQ either.

It helps that there isn't much down there that I enjoy doing though....

I didn't know this was ever up for debate, the government has never been able to do anything to prevent cartel violence. Cartels previously have stayed away from tourist areas because its where they make money.

People go to that shite hole because it is an exotic destination that caters to a cheap budget. Along with the DR and Jamaica, it is where the poorer element of tourists go to say they have been to a tropical out of country destination. They really have few options in the Caribbean that they can afford other than these 3 locations. And this segment of people are usually to ignorant and lazy to research better options. Cancun is often times the only place they have ever heard of and becomes their dream destination. Going to Cancun is like a rite of passage to many rednecks in the US. And I say that as a Southern semi redneck myself. The overwhelming majority of families in my area know three vacation destinations. Panama City Beach, Cancun, or a trashy cruise that stops in Cancun. Most of these people have never even heard of Naples much less a Grand Caymen or St Lucia.

Yes. There are things happening that make massive drug wars, cartel battles, mass shootings, beheadings, etc... look like child's play all the time in the major public tourist areas of New Orleans.

fricking idiot.

Even in the best of times, the medical care there is so bad it's not worth going.

You know how I know you've never been? Healthcare is perfectly fine most places. Dirt cheap too.
