Your grandfather flew either a B-17, B-24, or if he flew bomber missions over Japan during the war he may have down a B-29.

My question exactly.
Think about the issues Boeing had with trying to get the weight balance right on an engine change for an existing platform.
This is not necessarily an easy endeavor to update an old airframe with new engines.

Debatable. C-130s have been in constant production since 1954. C-130s do a broader mission set than a B-52 and even drops a bigger conventional bomb than a B-52. B-52s are an impressive 2nd.
Re-engining a 60 year old airframe just shows how broken the procurement process is.

Nope. The new engines will be anywhere between 20-40% more efficient than the current ones, but nowhere close to providing that type of range.

That’s not how it works at all. We submit our budget request to the OMB (part of the Executive branch) who works with the president’s staff including the NSC to develop the President’s Budget Request. That is then submitted to Congress and they develop the NDAA and the Defense Appropriations bill. So actually, Congress has the most power in this process.

So we're looking at engines they use on regional commuter jets? Probably about 15,000 to 20,000 pounds of thrust each?

The B-52 is a great plane but it's nowhere near as influential, iconic and famous as the Boeing 747.
The 747 is the plane that completely revolutionized air travel and truly shrunk the world and connected so many people in so many countries. It's advanced commerce and trade carrying massive amounts of economic goods, made even more knowledge seeking possible, eased spiritual journeys, carried out humanitarian missions, and safely transported our political leaders.
Furthermore, it's been flying strong for 50 years and while its passengers days will be done in the next few years, it still has a good future as a freighter as cargo companies love it.

Yep. Trying to stay close to the current thrust rating which is 17,000 lbs per engine. Much less than that and we degrade our max takeoff weight. Too much more would require major structural changes to the engine pylons and wings.

B-52's had a very unique whistling sound, we could feel the repercussions from the bombs miles away.
But the most destructive was napalm "crispy critters"

Not necessarily high bypass, but large high thrust engines yes. The rudder is not big enough to deal with the asymmetric thrust that would result from one of the outboard engines going out. Plus, you'd have to implement an auto-rudder system in case of that engine out scenario happening during takeoff. A pilot wouldn't be able to react fast enough to prevent the sudden yaw which would result in the aircraft departing the runway. At high gross weights a jet running off the runway into the dirt/grass would result in the landing gear starting to sink into the dirt and then sheering off. Lots of really bad things start to happen at that point.
They had to re-design the rudder and add an auto-rudder system for the KC-135 when they upgraded their engines years ago. We can't afford the price tag for what that would take on the B-52.

Which technique did your time travelling ancestor use to get a vehicle made in the 1960's into the 1940's? Also, how did he bribe the temporal police into looking the other way as he violated history?
