Nerd Baws - Anyone play Warhammer/40k?

I'll be the first to admit Warhammer/Warhammer 40k is one of the nerdiest things a man can do with his time.
With that said, it can be a really enjoyable hobby and the lore is so deep and expansive that it rivals legit literary works.
I used to collect and paint miniatures from 7th-8th grade, then I figured if I was to have any chance whatsoever with the ladies in high school that I should probably stop (turns out it didn't help
). Recently a friend of mine and his son picked it up and I've been thinking of grabbing a few mini's to paint and go have game night with them.
For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, Warhammer is tabletop strategy game played with very small figurines (miniatures). The collection and painting of these figures is a large part of the hobby and requires a ton of patience and skill. A typical mini is about 1-1.5 inches tall and extremely detailed. The skill some people have with painting these things is quite impressive:

I would break all kinds of shite in my house after getting frustrated trying to paint something that small.

My son would lose all the pieces playing with them

I think I would rather get a drug habit, which is much cheaper and much more socially acceptable.
I like the 40K storyline and other facets of it, but I don’t have the time or the money to buy my way to victory.

Warhammer meetings - where you can become the next mass shooter.

Brother and I tried playing in our early 20's. We made it about 10 mins in before the fighting over rule interpretation almost came to blows. Boxed it up and never looked back.

I've never played Warhammer or gotten into the lore, but I do hear good things about the novels. Though, after briefly watching some folks play in Little Wars back in the mid-90s, I do know that discs for effects coverage and tape measures were used...and that "Orks are immune to pinning!"
I've dabbled, this past year, with painting minis for D&D. Really need to finish painting the ones I already have.

I really like the lore of both but no clue how to actually learn more. I guess novels.

it is a very time consuming hobby and hideously expensive
Something new they just came out with to address this is a game called "kill team". It's played with a small squad, maybe 5-6 units, and a truncated rule set. Of course this is basically their gateway drug to set the hook.

I love the lore / books and read tons of them - no way in hell I would have the patience or ability to actually paint them worth a damn though.

There's a bunch of fun squad games out there.
Im trying to lure friends into a Frostgrave campaign.
You can field a team of 10 with just Reaper Bones models.

Playing P&P stories while fricked up is one of the funnest things you can do.

I’ve been collecting, painting, and playing for close to 30 years.
I have an army for almost every faction by now, both Warhammer and 40k.
The trick to enjoying the game is to not take it too seriously. People have a tendency to get too wrapped up in the game for some reason. Just don’t let the bulky rules tie you down. Do what seems reasonable and keep the game moving.
The trick to enjoying painting is to actually make the space for it. You get exponentially better at it if you have the right setup. Painting is relaxing to me. It’s an unusual hobby, but a challenging one. Sort of like tying fly fishing lures. If you can do it well, The results can impress.
