Dude, I read this story when you first posted it and just read it again. I don't know if its how you told it or what, but it a good "gives you chills" story.

Once back in the 80s my mom woke up one morning. She could see the light on under the bathroom door and heard my dad taking a shower. She was awake.
She shifted and saw a cowled monk standing next to the bed. There was NO chair or anything with clothing or anything right where he was. His face was in the darkness under the hood. No features.
It wasn’t like a voice in her head, but he was “saying,” somehow, that he was death. She was not afraid, she said, death wasn’t coming for her, he was just standing there. She turned over and tried to go back to sleep.
A couple of hours later an aunt called to tell us that one of my cousins committed suicide that morning.
My mom always said that she was born with a cowl over her face and was sensitive to weird feelings all her life. She didn’t talk that much about it.
Forgot to add that the cousin’s name was Mark, and that she saw a monk was a strange correlation to his name.

It has always been hard for me to believe things like this. I have always thought that its the brain playing tricks on people. As in the lighting in the room or something creates some time of illusion,
I have an aunt who, when she was younger, claimed she saw a spirit of some type. I remember one, she said she was standing in her kitchen and she turned around, where she was able to see the hall of their house and there was a young girl standing in the hall looking back at her. She said the girl's had was titled to one side like she was trying to figure out what she was looking at. At the time her son was a baby.. I think he was sleeping in the living room and she grabbed him and ran out the door. Her husband was at work.
I know this. Whether its real or not, there was no doubt in her mind that she saw what she said she did.

I did as well, until this happened to me.
I was asleep, dreaming that I was on a beach. The clouds were dark like a storm and the ocean was choppy like when a hurricane is offshore. There were people on the beach and they were running back and forth screaming about something. Then a giant black bird with shiny silver talons and the head of a pale woman with wild black hair grabbed me by the shoulders and started carrying me over the beach. I grabbed on of the bird's wings and we crashed on the beach. There was a sword laying next to me where I fell. I raised the sword up and said, 'In the name of Jesus Christ!' as I brought the sword down, killing the demon bird.
As soon as I did that, I woke up. I remember my bedroom clear as day. The bathroom light was on, the closet door was open, and my wife was asleep next to me. The hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. It felt like someone else was in the room with me. This was before we had kids so it was just me and my wife in the house. I was legit scared. All I could think to do was say, "In the name of Jesus, I command you to leave.'
As soon as I said that I heard, clear as day, someone ask "Why?" I started thinking of all the reasons I have that I believe what I do and eventually went back to sleep.
I've seen the same woman in my dreams before. She's always pale, skinny, black hair, and wearing a black dress. Every time I've dreamt of her, I've immediately woken up sacred. Something evil was in my house that night. I've never experienced anything like that again.

We have a friend of the family that says she is a "sensitive", she says that people that have passed often visit her in her dreams to talk.
I always thought it was bullshite, until one thanksgiving dinner years ago.
Every Thanksgiving we go down the bayou to eat at my sister in laws' house. This particular year one of her granddaughters just blows a fuse and for some reason, just starts laying in to her grandmother, my SIL. It made the dinner so uncomfortable, and honestly, I don't even remember what set her off.
Slowly, everyone just starts to leave and my SIL is crying trying to figure out what she did. The drive back home was quiet. My wife was upset, so we just listened to music and went home.
A few days later, my wife gets a call from our friend who is sensitive. She was visited by my wife's mom, who had passed 7 years prior. In this dream, she told our friend that her daughter (my SIL) needs to fix what happened with her granddaughter.
My wife was shocked my this, as she didn't tell our friend what happened at Thanksgiving dinner. She calls her sister and relays the message. Her sister is shocked too, but heeds the messages and apologies, fixing her relationship with her granddaughter.
Ever since then, I have went out of my way to never really piss my wife off, because I don't want to be on the receiving end of a dream visit.

What's a story that you've heard that still gives you chills
got home from work late last night, it was dark, house was quiet, went to the laundry room fridge to get a beer and opened the door, at first glance I couldn't see any Shiner Bock I looked a little closer and saw that my wife had put a gallon of milk in front of the Shiners and I was able to have a couple of them while I entered my work data into the computer, a harrowing experience there for a moment

People have vivid dreams in sleep paralysis because their conscious mind wakes up before the muscle paralysis of REM sleep fully subsides, allowing REM dreams to spill into wakefulness, creating hypnopompic hallucinations. This confusion between dreaming and waking also causes the perception of being awake, a phenomenon known as a false awakening, which is a type of dream that mimics reality.

I have had situations in which I can only describe as a feeling. Also, I was involved in a wreck in which a girl failed to yield and hit me on the front side and sent me into a telephone pole. I had a mild concussion. I still remember everything, but right after she hit me, I felt like I was in this tunnel and people and places, that I hadn't seen since I was a kid, along with people who were currently in my life.. And they were all just passing in front of me.. or I was passing along seeing all of these things as I moved along. It seemed like it lasted for minutes, but in reality it only lasted seconds.. but there was something calming about it. Then EMT opened my door and was yelling "are you okay. Sir. We are going to remove you from the vehicle" and I was wondering why they were acting so intense.
The next day I saw my vehicle and understood why and it looked bad, but it was almost as if that moment in what I perceived as a tunnel, saved me. That's the only time I ever had an experience that I would describe as spiritual

I’ve read this whole thread. Smiling Man gets me every time.
I don’t have the patience to find which page it’s on, but the true story from a poster where there are two kids somewhere in a field and some hobo is under a tree lurking and they take off running…?

what gave me chills is the fact I was thinking of this story before I clicked on this thread.

One of the GOAT threads on the OT. And Penpals is still the best story in here.
I actually re-read it a couple months ago and it's still just so fricking good. I've tried and tried and read countless nosleep stories on reddit, and none have ever come close to Penpals.

I've been following this thread since it was first posted.
I was just going back through it to see if there was any stories I may have missed or glossed over.
Can I say something without everyone getting mad?
I thought the smiling man story was kind of dumb, and I've never understood where everyone here seems to think its scary.

Everyone seemed to love it, and I was jut kind of meh about it. Didn't think it was all the scary or interesting.

It’s also linked in one of my stickied posts. Any story linked should be in those posts. If not let me know and I’ll add it.

To each his own. It’s the subtlety that’s clever. Much like Dracula. It’s not over the top, but frightening by implicitly. That’s what makes good literature.

It's not the best in this thread but I wouldn't say dumb
