I’ve only been at my current job for 5 years. If one of my female coworkers claimed a patted her on the arse at some point and it was absolutely false, how the frick would you expect me to prove that other than the female coming out and admitting she was lying?

Possibly security footage. But even that can be erased.

No I mean the first obvious hit job of a guy. Or the first investigation into a woman for extortion.
I would hope at your job you’d not be fired in your scenario. I’d hope a pattern would have to be established to can you. Some corroboration. You’d get a definite discussion with HR. At that point sadly it’s on you to avoid that worker like the plague. Never find yourself alone with her.

Al Roker makes an inappropriate comment every other minute on air, but he’s likeable. Lauer is a douche.

In which case I think most normal workplaces already have this handled. You probably get suspended but not fired.
I actually worked at a place where a dude (PA) was canned for hitting on nurses. He was warned and suspended. His final accuser was fricking nuts. Had her complaint stood alone she was too sketchy to get him fired, but the pattern was there. The guy was habitual. So he was gone. Deservedly.

A lot of corporate American quietly settles complaints as a cost of doing business even when they don't think it is legitimate.
Taking action against a high profile figure like this probably means that it was both serious and credible.
