I think that people can contribute to their own success or failure, but it seems environment and genetics play the largest role.
Can anyone claim that their success is entirely their own? Mostly their own? Does it all come down to where you are born, who you parents are, and your natural gifts?

This comes across as you having things go against you in your life that you are unwilling to blame on anything other than "uncontrollable" factors so you defensively write everyone's fate off as predetermined and unmanageable.

I thought I controlled my own destiny and hard work solved everything. But I realized that most of great things in my life were gifted to me, including current good paying job that I have. Life itself is also a gift.

So you are saying that people who... let's say.. are on their way to be extremely successful, but they frick it up by becoming a drug addict or they met someone who they gave up everything for... Or whatever the case may be. When they were born, their life was already mapped out for them to be on the road to success only to frick it up in some way?
Or if some poor white trash hits the lottery only to be broke again 5 years later.. That was all programed into them when they were born?

Couldn't have done it without my parents and the way I was raised. But financially, I'm more successful than my sibling who was afforded the same "nurture" aspect, so I think I can take some credit for my own success.

Nature and Nurture.... Great question. I believe both heavily influence our position in life. We cant discount personal accountability, ultimately we are responsible for our decisions/actions and THIS has greatest impact on our life.
Some come from horrible childhood conditions and modeling yet, overcome and live successful lives. Others seemly have it all, gifts, talents, and functional upbringing yet... fail miserably.

i’m going nature.
i’m about 7th consecutive generation of my family to follow basically the same career arc.
we tend to be rather talented and fast learners. so we move up rather quickly. but then we get bored as hell with it, plateau, then look for something else.
that’s why we never amount to much more than what we all are.
