Not more per capita. More millionaires -- period.

Stayed in a bed and breakfast there a few years ago. But much to do other than look at the plantations and walk by the river. A core of decent restaurants.

Beautiful town, a little sleepy, but very nice. I’ve enjoyed many nights there.

Almost none of the planters were Jewish. The Jews were the middle class businessmen in Natchez. The great majority of the planters were Episcopalian or Presbyterian.
The girl was Rosalie Beekman whose parents owned a business Under the Hill.
And there was no “small battle.” the Union ironclad “Essex” fired a few cannonballs into the city and the mayor went down to the river waving a white flag to surrender the city.

It was the 1850 federal census.
Lots of Natchez planters owned little land in Adams County. Most of their absentee landlord holdings were in the Ms Delta and Louisiana. The loess soil of the Natchez area was wearing out and the smart money guys bought elsewhere.

Natchez is cool. If you want a chill weekend go. If you are looking for excitement, don’t go.

Natchez has seen a rapid increase in younger people moving back since the pandemic also due in large part to the movie boon that Tate Taylor has created there coupled with a Mayor that actually knows how to grow and promote the city
Putting it into a short window there has been a definite increase in the last few years, but I'm not sure that is all through choice. Covid cut a lot of people deep and I imagine a good bit of the increase was from people having to move back home. Everyone saying it has went down is not wrong either though, no industry to support the common man. If you want to make money in Natchez you better come with connections or already have startup capital. It's a typical southern democrat town. Money is with land holders, bankers, doctors, ets. Good people like Tate and Ronnie are bringing new life to the area and getting the younger generations to invest but it is a far cry from what it once was and will never be what it could be without some type of industry.

Don't speed next time. Vidalia is one of the safest places you can be. Thanks to the local PD.

I like Natchez and the lakes across the river. If you’re an outdoorsman it’s paradise, have family there and going to visit in the 90’s was awesome but that was back when they still had the IP mill and the tire plant. Not having an interstate is what really hurting the city. As some people have stated if it had a good public school system it could definitely be like ocean springs or fairhope. Also Stevan Ridley TYFYS.

Natchez MS: Opinions?
Was just there a month ago for a day and a half seminar.
Prior to that it had been quite a few years since I had been, but I had a new appreciation for the town.
Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it has somewhat of a Mandeville type of feel to it. Small bed and breakfast kind of a place. Without getting into the quality of the food, it has quite with a decent number of eating options and the bars down by the river is cool. The walk back up sucks though.
Also a great little community to old south historic places.
Someone recently asked me of a decent place to visit within an hour or two drive and Natchez was one of my recommendations.

But we have Interstate 4 coming!
Our public schools can’t improve until there is industry for the parents to stay in town for

by “middle class businessmen” you mean “slave traders”
The Jews were generally merchant types - being in commercial business was often looked down upon by the ruling class, & the Jews would step in to fill the void

It ain’t the lack of an interstate, as stated up thread the jobs went away. I watched it happen. NAFTA and

Mamy's cup board. Does that still exist??
Rode by it in a convoy to Ft Chaffee in 1991. A black troop in my vehicle was laughing his arse off after seeing that.

Ethyl closed in 2001, 35-40 jobs; IP in 2003, 640 jobs not to mention the lick on the logging and forestry industry.
Armstrong in 1986 but Titan ran it for a few years late 90’s early 00’s, can’t find job no’s but it was significant.

Many folks from NOLA including my gang take trips to Port Gibson. The area offers fantastic hunting, a rich history, and some really charming B&Bs like Collina and Isabella houses. Plus, there's the Natchez Trace nearby, lots of sunken roads you can bike on, and some interesting museums, including the Grand Gulf Military Park. You can even go kayaking down the Bayou Pierre. If you're thinking about a second home near the outdoors, there are some beautiful old houses for sale that are quite a steal. about a 25 minute drive to Tate Taylor‘s place at Churchill. they are several summer camps around so some people have stayed a night or two in Port Gibson while they pick up their kids or drop them off… It is definitely an unknown gem. We like staying there because it’s halfway between Natchez and Vicksburg and we can take in both towns in a weekend. there was even a post on the outdoor board a few years back that invited hunters to come be part of a lease…
