quote:

The small orifice, denominated the "ostiole", that is visible on the middle of the fruit is a narrow passage, which allows the specialized fig wasp, Blastophaga psenes to enter the fruit and pollinate the flowers, after which the fruit grows seeds.

quote:

If a fig wasp enters a female fig accidentally instead of a male one, there is no room in the interior for it to reproduce. And it cannot escape, because its wings and antennae have broken off. So the wasp dies inside,

quote:

The fig uses an enzyme known as ficin to break down the wasp into protein, though it doesn’t always break down the entire exoskeleton. So, yes, technically when you bite into a fig you are in fact eating fig wasps, or what once was a fig wasp

It’s like the worms you eat in fish and abscesses in beef . It’s what gives it flavor.

I love to make & eat fig preserves.

Actually, I make a homemade pizza with a fig preserve base, feta cheese, and whole slices of bacon.

It’s sweet & salty heaven.

Very few to zero figs that are pollinated this way in the US. The wasp is non native and virtually every variety here is pollinated a different way.
