Just thinking that Mars could have been Earth like billions of years ago is exciting. It was our orginal home, and we terraformed earth. Just kidding, of course.

Maybe fund one mission, but there is plenty of oil for generations on Earth, making it financially stupid to try and drill for oil on Mars to bring back to earth.
But, that could mean you'd have the ability to get fuel on Mars and stay there for long periods of time.

He's right. One of our biggest concerns which are delaying a manned trip right now is a viable way to shield humans during the course of the space voyage. Even using the shortest trip time it would still expose a human to a ridiculous amount of radiation. I mean it's nothing immediately life threatening but definitely enough to cause cancer in years ahead. That problem won't be as big of an issue once a home base is set up. As the planet can at least provide some protection from one side. But with no magnetic field protecting the planet it gets a lot of rads when facing sun. I think it'll be solved pretty soon though.

How much older is Mars than Earth? Is anyone thinking the intraplanetary theory (or the theory that posits life could've started from an asteroid or what have you from another planet) could be a possibility? All conjecture obviously but interesting to ponder

Just asked my friend at NASA...it's water on Mars. No big deal.
Edit: Apparently there is dirt on Uranus as well. Think he might be fcking with me on this last part but pretty sure water on mars is the big thing.
