99% of their big announcements have been the equivalent of clickbait.

This is the biggest Mars discovery since we discovered there were dry creek beds on Mars. This is a really big fricking deal.

I'm not saying that this announcement was bull at all. this is probably the most significant discovery that NASA has made in my lifetime.

Sorry wasn't specifically targeted at you, more of a general message to the people in the thread trashing it, though I did misinterpret what you meant

It's at least a 3 year mission going to Mars, if not 5.

Did you say 5 year mission?

Some of you don't understand how big of a deal it is that Mars has water.

Well then, you misunderstand why we're bitching.

The problem is, this BIG announcement has been known for years. We've seen pics of mud on the wheels of the rovers, for frick's sake. We've seen ice. We have known the presence of surface water for a long, long time. GD NASA scientists have to be able to prove something with a retarded level of certainty before they'll confirm it.

In fact, we're 99.9% sure there are microbial forms of life that lived on Mars - and probably survive to this day, but it's gonna take NASA another 20 years to admit that.

ETA: this pic is pre-katrina:

this is the mud pic, from Spirit (sol 1048) don't know actual date of image, but it's older than 2011 for sure)

So, nothing SHOCKING about this announcement...been a long time coming, is all.
