Senior NASA officials say that the agency’s Space Launch System — the massive rocket designed to propel its ambitious Artemis program to establish a base on the moon — is “unaffordable,” according to a report Thursday from the US Government Accountability Office.

quote:

The report found that the space agency “does not plan to measure production costs to monitor the affordability of its most powerful rocket.” In addition to the nearly $12 billion already spent developing the SLS rocket, NASA asked for more than $11 billion in its most recent budget request to fund the program for the next four years, according to the report.

Just give Elon the keys and ask him to get us to the moon.

Has NASA ever been “affordable”? I don’t care how expensive actual research and development is for something like nasa, what I don’t want is absolute waste like DEI initiatives and Muslim outreach programs and all of the other non-scientific, non-space related, non-beneficial to advancing technology bullshite initiatives and waste that has plagued ALL government and private corporations.

Cut back on the waste, plan properly. And cut the fluff out and I don’t care if nasa doesn’t make a profit.

Someone once defined an elephant as a mouse built by the government.

But I bet NASA uses the right pronouns.

SLS only exists to allow Lockheed and Boeing to continue invoicing for a couple billion a year. It also pays for the bloated NASA bureaucracy which essentially produces nothing at this point. It’s jokingly referred to as the Senate Launch System b/c it was foisted on the Agency by a bunch of senators representing states with NASA centers (pork barrel jobs) and Lockheed/Boeing lobbyists.

The ridiculous cost is the point of the program.

This report just states what has been known for years. It’s essentially a jobs program and corporate welfare.

What’s really sad is that unmanned exploration is being severely cut to fund this.

They won't do that. They're trying to investigate him for treason because they're ideological idiots.

Exactly this.

In fact, there is no reason for this rocket to even exist outside of political lobbying. The SpaceX starship can easily do the same thing for less money.

In fact, NASA can’t even land on the moon with the SLS rocket. All it does it take a capsule to a lunar orbit so the astronauts can then transfer to a SpaceX Starship to actually land on the moon.

You can only vote for the politicians, not the programs.

How do you even define affordable for something like this?

NYC is spending $12 billion to house immigrants temporarily in shelters for the next 3 years. So, based on this the SLS seems down right cheap. And at least we'll get something in return from it.

Well the SLS has so far cost the taxpayer 11.8 Bn and NASA just asked for another 11.2 Bn to continue funding the program. Development of the SLS began in 2011. It has zero reusability.

Space Starship began development in 2019. It’s fully reusable, more powerful and can carry a larger payload than the SLS. SpaceX has spent 5.3 Bn on its development so far.

No sh!t it is. And if I'm not mistaken NASA didn't even want to keep developing it but Congress basically made them.
