There are certain kinds of people that just have to have some cause that they are "working" to rectify. Whether it's evangelicals, militant vegans, feminists, BLM/Kap., animal rights, environmental weirdos... If there is no injustice they will invent one to fight. Some people just can't leave well enough alone. It's a sickness. For the most part it's people on the left because most people in the center/right have lives, and they actually need to attend to real problems and not imaginary ones.

The dad is a pretty weird guy. He went from being nerdy in high school, to turning into a cowboy in college (boots, shirts, cowboy hats, the whole 9), then after college he became a total SJW.
ETA: the scary part is that he helps form the science curriculum for Louisiana high schools. Who knows what wack-job ideas he's pushing in the classroom.

Also, about your previous point, although choosing ones clothes isn't necessarily a major life altering decision, there are also reasons most parents don't let their children dress up like it's Halloween everyday. It stems from wanting to teach them how to operate in normal society and how to present oneself. I would have the same opinion if someone let their kid dress up like Merlin everyday.
