Terrifying. Any chance you survive that?

Never mind. Read the article. Three cars buried and people got out

Except for one or two, it looks like black and white photos, crazy how much snow just dumped on it all to take up all the color.

They seem to expect this. What conditions make things ripe for an avalanche? A good snow pack and sudden warming?

Early snow developed into a weak foundation after dry, warm weather in mid-November, and the storms that followed built stiff layers of snow on top. Those weak layers weren’t enough to hold the heavy snow the mountains received this year.

Warm temps, rain on snow then heavy snow fall & strong winds overloading snow pack on steep wind-loaded slopes most of which face NW/N/E/& SE.

Picture of an Avalanche from Gunnison a couple of days ago before the latest wave of big storms hit.

We have been at Copper Mtn. since Saturday and have had 50-60 inches of snow. All the fresh powder make the conditions right. They are expecting more over night into tomorrow. The mountain only had a few lifts open today because staff couldn’t get in after an avalanche last night.
