Knew a health and safety guy who said this in meetings. It was true. Frick up and you were out.

There are a lot of my way or the highway guys in here.

It's also an old school way of thinking. So even though they fall into that category, that does not mean they have never been in a leadership position.

The way I had a former boss explain it to me is, you can do it my way and if it's wrong we learn and move forward. If you do it your way and you are wrong, I will replace you with someone that will do it my way. He was open to dialogue about the current subject, but he would never waiver off of his position at that moment. If he took your position into consideration, you would start to see that down the road so he could take credit for the change. (the insecure boss referenced above).

Crazy thing is, he was really good at what he did and retired a few years ago as a high executive of the same company I worked under him with. That style didn't bother me too much, because I was only there for the paycheck while going through grad school

I may say something like that to my children but not to grown arse adults.

I joke that teamwork means everyone does it my way.

I have never told an employee exactly that.

I have said "you will do it the way I tell you to do or I will fire you", which is basically the same.

What dumbass employee thinks they can decide how something is done, if their boss specifically told them to do it differently?

With that being said I have always asked people to speak up if they know of a better way, I am willing to listen, but if I have a reason to not change things they better do it they way I am paying them to do or they will be unemployed.

Its really simple.

that’s great your boss has never said ‘my way or the highway’, but that is what this thread is about

And I don’t necessarily think it’s the mark of a mature, confident leader to accept feedback. There are a lot of immature and lazy employees that need to be told exactly what to do.

I once heard a gang foreman tell his crew, "All you bitches will get fired before I lose my job."

Works great when you have a team that is engaged and intelligent enough to inform high level decisions.

Change that scenario and the type of leader who can't make decisions without feedback is going to be leading a failing team/product.

Sometimes a leader needs to actually make the calls. It's why they get paid more.

Management and supervision of employees is a service, not a lordship. The best mgrs dont refer to people as "My men" and have this kind of mentality.

A boss is the first one out of the foxhole.

that’s not the point. The point is that you do as you’re told and that’s the end of that. Nobody likes an employee that wants to question their superior.

So yes if you don’t agree you can walk.

It’s not asking a question it’s questioning their judgement

I never say that exact phrase. But as the business owner thats exactly how it is.

I'm liable and responsible for everything, you as an employee arent. Its wild employees never comprehend this.

If my judgement is wrong, I want to know it.

Also, if your employees trust you, they'll not question your judgement. This is why you earn their trust and keep it.
