Installed 2/21. Since then it has stopped working 4 times, including today. Installer is all apologetic, comes out, gets it running and then within a week or two it is not cooling. Every problem imaginable. I want to go nuclear and make them give me a new system. Anyone had any luck doing this?

Are they having to replace parts or are they screwing up installs? If parts are going bad your should have a warranty from the manufacturer

You can prolly find a used trailer with a window unit pretty cheap. No need to buy a new one.

Frustrating for sure.

What kinds of problems are they fixing?

Nothing trashy about that.

Walmart has some 5,000 BTU units for 120 for a small room.

I can remember my Grandparents house. They had large Sears window unit from like the 70’s. It lasted nearly 20-30 years. They had smaller window units in the bedrooms. The house was built in the 1950’s or 1940’s. They even had a wall unit natural gas heater.

Their house was well insulated. I believe they used blown in Asbestos or something like it in the attic. (They lived into their 80’s and did not have cancer.)

I know it seems that way, but is it really multiple problems, or just iterations of the same problem?

Newer systems are designed to reduce energy consumption in various ways. One way is that they take a bigger jolt of energy at the start of a cooling cycle instead of a long slow draw. Because of this, they are more prone to tripping breakers.

One problem we had with our new unit was that we needed to upgrade the wires (up the amps) that ran from the breaker box to the unit. I had to hire an electrician to do it.

I'd quit calling the same guy and have a fully licensed installer with a stellar reputation come out and look at the system. Get a second opinion from a guy who's not staring down the cost of mitigating any frickups he may have made.

Poor installation or improper sizing are the top causes of HVAC related problems in newly installed DX systems, not equipment issues from the factory (though the equipment CAN be damaged in very short order by a bad install). I'm ESPECIALLY staring hard at a design or install issue when the problems manifest on a new system and the guy who did the design and install comes out four times and hasn't yet found an equipment issue that is the root cause of problem. The goodish news is that the electronics and self-diagnostics on modern systems are much better at detecting problems that may cause physical damage and then shutting down to prevent catastrophic failure than older systems are.

If it really is an equipment issue that came from the factory, the new guy may spot it where the first guy hasn't been able to.

Your HOA might have a problem with a cooling tower installed next to your house. You better check with them first.

Had the same problem with a York in 2016. Brand new and had 4 compressor failures. Finally went with new HVAC guy and Rheem. No issues since. But, even though they replaced the York unit and compressor each time for free... I knew that once the labor part was over it was going to be hitting me every 4 months. I just bit the bullet and bought the new one. I thought about lawyers getting involved but it looked like there is no lemon law on A/C units.

you cant so if you change it its all on you

sometimes a company can talk the manufacturer into replacing a unit but to be honest, in most cases these things work or they dont.

since you failed to tell us what things broke or had to be redone or replaced, its hard to give advice based on nothing but vague description that it "had problems"

were they replacing capacitors? compressors? fan motors? freon leaks? wiring issues as in relays and control switches, circuit boards?

Call the manufacturer on the unit and ask for them to send a certified tech to inspect. Verify it’s the equipment and not the installation.

Also threaten your AC guy with a redhibition claim. Tell him you’ll likely have to file suit unless the entire unit is replaced.

Do it nicely at first - bee to honey thing.

Just free advice. Phone calls are not evidence. Written communication is evidence. Do not rely on phone calls. There will be ‘amnesia’ if you simply rely on phone calls.

It never ceases to amaze me how the inability of written communication holds people back.

We have central air in our trailer, but installed window units at both ends to combat the summer heat.

Just make sure the window does not have water damage, if the wood is rotted, just purchase make a T-Frame out of a 2x4. Without the support, gravity will pull the lower wall down over-time.

My understanding about asbestos is it is only dangerous once it is disturbed. So if they just lived in the house without renovations or any kind of damage to the insulation that makes sense.
